Synaptic Packet Manager Merge list

Postby iqhamid on Sun Feb 28, 2010 6:29 pm

Hi Guys,

I got the following error while trying to update Gloria 7 using Synaptic update:

" E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/packages.linuxmint.com_dists_gloria_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
"

Please help me to keep my LinuxMint box updated.
Thanks and king regards
Iqbal

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I would wait a while and try again to update. I am not running Mint 7 but it is possible that something in the repo was being updated around the same time you tried to update. Wait a while and try to update and see if you still encounter this problem.

I tried several restarts and tried to update after about 24 hours but with the same error. Still I am unable to use Synaptic to update the system. Any advice....

Thanks.

I solved this problem for myself, hopefully it will help you.

do the following:

sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.old
sudo touch /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo aptitude update
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.old /etc/apt/sources.list

At this point you should be able to use Synaptic, Apt-get, or Aptitude as usual.
