External Monitor setup difficulties

Postby Badman27 on Wed Feb 10, 2010 7:26 pm

Hey all,
I'm operating xfce off of a Dell Latitude D510 and trying to setup my external monitor. The monitor is detected but I can't get it to do anything but mirror my primary display. The Graphics card is the "Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller"

So far I have A: looked for proprietary driver (none found)
B: tried editing the settings under Menu->Settings->Display (only detected one monitor and no add/detect)
C: Downloaded Intel's linux drivers (they came in a tarball)

Even though I downloaded the tarball I'm still pretty useless with Linux and don't exactly know what to do with it :_ )
I also went to Menu->Settings->Desktop, it was giving me the option to edit the wallpaper on either monitor but the function wasn't working. Changing one desktop changed them both.

Thanks alot for any and all help!

I have successfully set up Radeon and GeForce for dual monitors with one screen over both, but so far I have not experimented with my laptop and Intel
It should be the same as with the Radeon (open) driver which I used in Gloria no problems
Both my desktops and both monitors have VGA and DMI
I have to move the VGA cable from the not used desktop to my laptop
I can't have my primary desktop running then so this experimenting will take some time and I'll have to come back to you

I just checked with Helena main (decided to do some hands on - more fun :)) and it is possible to mirror and shut down the laptop display, but if I try not to mirror I get two black displays with a mouse pointer in one of them
This takes some more work

I'm getting the same problem you describe in your post above. I've got a TC4400 Tablet PC with the Intel graphics. When I attempt to have a side-by-side (e.g. non-mirrored) display setup using a typical Dell 15" LCD (same resolution, but 75 hz instead of the 60hz notebook monitor) - everything goes black.

I can see a 1 pixel width column on the left edge of one screen that I can fathom is displaying my wallpaper. My mouse cursor is perfectly visible over the black background, but nothing else. In the display panel, if I stack the screens on top of each other, the extended desktop works just fine. Damn is it annoying though, as a vertical orientation is just wonky.

Help!

Oh just remembered - in Helena main I can get one screen if I put the monitors on top of each other, but not side by side
