How to Connect to the internet using a Nokia 6300

Postby Se7en on Fri Mar 12, 2010 12:27 pm

I've been searching around for some tutorials on how to connect a HUAWEI usb modem . a lot of them didn't provide much .. but then I came up with this alternative solution that could help a lot of us who experienced the same issue ... here how I managed to do it
:!: (note : I've used my Nokia 6300 and a GPRS sim card with Mint 8 (Gnome) powered computer with a bluetooth adapter connected to it )
Remove the SIM card from the usb modem , place it into your cellphone , then slam that HUAWEI modem to the wall !! (jk you don't have to do that :) )
Start configuring your phone as fallows : enter Menu - Settings - Configuration - Personal Configuration Settings . Press 'options' and select 'Add new' - 'Access Point'... enter your account name (should be your GPRS provider name such as "Vodaphone" ...ect) - Now select 'Access Point Settings' - Bearer Settings ' ... Here you 'll edit your access point setting , this may vary according to the Service provider ,usually it's like : "User Name :Internet " "Password : internet " .Get out to the 'Personal Settings Menu' and you should see your newly created access point ,Select 'Options' and then 'Activate' that's it ! those are the things you should do to get your phone configured .
Now , connect the bluetooth adapter , the Bluetooth sys tray icon will show , right Click and select 'Set up new device ..' to open up the pair wizard (remember to turn on bluetooth on your phone ) then pair it to your computer (enter the digits on the screen to your into phone after being requested to) . Be sure to check the box that says 'Access the Internet using your mobile phone' in the last step of the wizard . Now ,right click on your Network Manager Applet and select the "your:blue:tooth:address:PANU" entry :)
There !! the computer should try to access the phone and get you online in few secs ! nice and sweet ..
this trick should give you a stable internet connection and a full advantage of your bandwidth . few tips you should consider though :
 keep the phone away from the speakers while connecting (to avoid the buzzing !)
 Connect the phone to the charger cuz it's dialling , and that cud consume your battery in blink of an eye !
 add a system monitor applet to your task bar and make it show your network activity '1sec Update interval I suggest'
I hope it works ! Feedback are welcome ..

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

In the long run.The time you spend on the internet using the cellphoen, would be like the minutes you use to talk on the phone. You can,but you will have dial up speed.Any phone can be used as a modem but the speed no matter what type of phone will always be dial up speed.

The main purpose of this is giving ppl with usb modems the chance to break free from the dependence on the ISP software which most of those aren't available on Linux . the cost doesnt matter "cause you're using your prepaid service , you only replacing the USB modem with your phone .

I use Linux Mint 9 KDE.
Is there something similar for it ?
Because KBluetooth4 does not even recognize my Nokia 2323 Classic.
I then installed gnome-bluetooth package and was able to pair up with my phone.
But there is no option where I get to use my phone as an internet access point.
Can someone please help me out ??? :(
