ATi x1900 - Compiz, Beryl

Post by shino »

Hello,

just installed Mint, installed propetiary ATi Drivers with the restricted drivers manager, startet Beryl Manager and changed WM to Beryl.
Automatically switches down to "Metacity".

If I set it to "Compiz" it stays there, but its the same as with Metacity.

Cant get it to work. The .mint package from the How-tos wont even install that stuff.

"Desktop effects" @System settings gets "composite not available".

Almost everything works fine, but Compiz Fusion is a must-have for me if not using vista.

Driver installation worked perfect. But as i read ATi wont do it with Compiz/Beryl, right?

But there just has to be a solution for that

Welcome to Mint shino
Unfortunately ATI does not like Linux and the restricted drivers can't be used with Beryl (at least not without a bit of trickery)
Here's one link
http://www.linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopi ... ati&t=2935
and as tseliot states:
ATI's proprietary driver won't let you run Beryl +AIGLX.
You should use XGL instead.
Here is a guide that helped at least one Mintie :)
http://www.linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopi ... ati&t=3848
and here is a third solution

Thanks for the answer.

Iam currently not at my pc, most probably next time friday.., but i will try it and post results.

Installing xgl seems a bit tricky, wondering why noone of the compiz/fusion/beryl team integrated fixed ati + nvidia support(aixgl + xgl within).
But mint did a great job of making linux more than a playground. Incredible that everyone speaks of suse, mint does so much better.

Greetz,
Shino.

The problem is with ATI - not Compiz/Beryl as you will find in one of the links :)
Sad, but true
