No connection to repositories in Mint 8

Postby Jezzr on Thu Apr 01, 2010 7:46 am

I've read a lot of posts on here with a similar problem since updating to Mint 8, and many on Ubuntu Forums with Karmic Koala, but I've yet to find a solution to this one. Hopefully there's a straightforward answer. Since updating to Mint 8 I can't run Mintupdate, synaptic, or any other update program. Doing a manual apt-get update doesn't work either. I get an error message like this:

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/m ... 1_i386.deb Could not connect to archive.ubuntu.com:80 (1.0.0.0). - connect (113: No route to host)

All the repositories are ticked. I can connect to the internet with Firefox as normal. But anything to do with updates doesn't work.

I suspect a router problem somehow, as if mintupdate is trying to use the wrong IP address. But this is where I'm coming unstuck. My router is a Linksys that I get into with 192.168.1.1. It says it is online, and like I say, I can visit any website with no problem. But what I want to do is to put in the correct IP address into the Preferences field of mintupdate or synaptic to connect direct rather than by proxy. I've tried 192.168.1.1 and just get this:

W: Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/helena/Release.gpg Could not connect to 192.168.1.1:3128 (192.168.1.1). - connect (111: Connection refused)

As you can tell, I don't really know what I'm doing. Somewhere in all the router settings it probably has the number I need. But I don't know what it looks like. I found this:

Description Type IP State Online Disconnect Reason
BT pppoa N/A Not Connected 0 N/A
BT pppoa N/A Not Connected 0 N/A
BT pppoa 91.85.179.139 Connected 1hr 34min 14sec N/A
Gateway DNS
91.85.160.1 212.104.130.9
212.104.130.65

But that doesn't work either. Synaptic settings have either Direct connection to Internet or via proxy. Neither seem to help, and the proxy one wants a port field entered as well as an IP. No idea what that would be.

Does anyone have a quick and easy answer as to how I can get mintupdate to use the same settings as my router is using to connect with Firefox? Because at the moment all I'm getting is:

Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/helena/Release.gpg Could not connect to packages.linuxmint.com:80 (1.0.0.0). - connect (113: No route to host)

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

This looks like it may be an issue with your network/internet setup on that machine.

The DNS is not being properly resolved for archive.ubuntu.com (which comes back as 1.0.0.0 -- an invalid address) or packages.linuxmint.com (which comes back as 192.168.1.1 -- a local address [probably your router] on your LAN). Once you have your DNS issues straightened out, your updates should start working again.

Yeah, that's what I suspected.

Any tips on how to straighten out those DNS issues? I have no knowledge of this subject at all so a step by step guide would be handy.

Or to put it another way... why would all the repositories and updates work fine in Mint 7, then suddenly stop working on installing Mint 8, despite the internet connection still functioning? What changed in the way the update uses DNS settings between 7 and 8?

I would be surprised to learn that DNS resolution methodology changed at all between those two Mint releases...

are you sure you didn't change anything else in your local network setup? reconfigure or add a router, get a new router, change ISPs, get a new cable/dsl modem, etc?

Nothing changed at all on my system. It was all working perfectly in Mint 7 yesterday with exactly the same setup. I downloaded Mint 8 onto a USB stick, checked the MD5 sum (identical) and installed it without a hitch this morning. And as I say, internet access works perfectly - I just can't update anything.

So no hardware has changed, no settings on the router have changed, not even any new cables. Very frustrating.

So far the only way to get any reaction at all from MintUpdate is to change the Network tab in Package Manager from Direct Connection to Proxy and back again. Then it reloads, gets a ton of updates listed, but fails to download any of them with the error messages in my first post - cannot connect. If I actually new what proxy number to put in I would try that, but my router manual, which was written in Chinese and then loosely run through Google Translate via a couple of other languages first, tells me nothing so simple.

Router's a Guru GWART2 54125, and it has Just Worked for Red Hat 6, Fedoras 3 and 4, Ubuntu Feisty through to Intrepid, not to mention Mint 7, but it looks like Koala's finally defeated it.

Reset the router, re-entered all the details. Internet connection works. Try MintUpdate and it starts downloading. But then it hangs and I get this:

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

etc etc

Why oh why did I decide it would be a good idea to upgrade from Mint 7? :)

Re: No connection to repositories in Mint 8

Well, so far I have:

Edited connections in Network Manager. I've set IPv6 to Ignore, to Automatic, and back to ignore. I've ticked 'Make available to all' and unticked it again.

I have checked the source repositories, tested the server, replaced it with one in Bulgaria which was meant to be quicker (god knows why - I'm in England), edited the /apt/sources.list and pasted in known good ones. All nice healthy debs. No # in sight. It seemed to download, but was just trying to fool me - 18 minutes of downloading, but what I didn't see was that every single one got a Fail.

I've added the manual proxy from my ISP to the synaptic preferences, then taken it off again and switched to direct connection. Neither work.

I've run mintupdate again and again and again and although it tells me there are 147 updates available, as soon as I try to download them it says No route to host.

I've dismantled the router, tried a new one, gone back to the old one, checked all the settings and reset everything again. Nope. No joy.

I've checked Network Proxy settings are 'Direct Connection'. Turned them off and on again. And all I get is :

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

And nobody seems to have the faintest idea what to suggest.

Still no luck with it. But a curious thing... I stuck in an old IDE harddrive with Mint 7 on it. Same router settings as with Mint 8 - everything identical. Went to run Mint Update in 7 and it's working fine. Swapped back to the Mint 8 HDD and ran MintUpdate. No connection.

So something must have changed between the two. It makes no sense to me, but maybe it will to one of the Mint gurus on here.

Yesterday was a real dark night of the soul after 14 hours of trying to get this working. I even found myself idly browsing for copies of Windows 7. Been Windows free since 2003 but this update nearly undid me. For now I'm going to stick with Mint 7, which at least works for me.

I have played around with server settings etc. and they seem to have little effect on the randomness of the connection.

I haven't used Linux in a long time but have recently reverted to it for its stability.

Another curious and maybe related issue is the inability of the Hardware Drivers software to activate the drives it finds. When I choose to activate the ATI/AMD Graphics card the downloading window comes up but never downloads and then the message I get is:

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/m ... 5_i386.deb Unable to connect to archive.ubuntu.com http:

Ive tried bypassing through the terminal and no effect.

Any help appreciated.

Also i tired to connect directly to LAN which made no difference.

I'm using an Asus laptop -M51vr, DUO 9400, Wireless: 802.11n+BT, 4G ram.

I also have windown Vista on this machine. I hope to get read of it if i manage to get Linux running well.

Cheers again

Could it be the source list? are the repositories specified correctly?

This is my sources list, after ive added a couple of repositories

deb http://mirror.optus.net/linuxmint/packages/ helena import upstream main

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/jre-phoenix/ppa/ubuntu karmic main

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/jre-phoenix/ppa/ubuntu karmic main

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ karmic main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ karmic-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ karmic-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ karmic partner
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ karmic free non-free

IS this ok?

I also am getting this same problem with LinuxMint 8 Helena. Updates had been working fine through this morning (04/10/2010 08:22) when the system updated Firefox.

I noticed that the mintUpdate log shows the following error:

Code: Select all
-- Error in checkAPT.py, could not refresh the list of packages

Anybody got a clue how to fix this?
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.21GHz, 2GB RAM, Galaxy NVIDIA 9500GT, Foxconn Winfast 6150BK8MC mobo, dual-booting LinuxMint r9 (Isadora), Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

I have the same problem - packages can't be downloaded from the repositories, and it gives me the same errors.. This is on a freshly installed Linux Mint 8 (today!), and I haven't been able to install the things I want because of this..

Are there really still no one that have solved this problem? :(

I've also been having this problem when I try to update Mint 8. See the error below.

Code: Select all
W: Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/karmic/Release.gpg  Could not connect to packages.medibuntu.org:80 (88.191.82.11), connection timed out

I think I found a solution but haven't tried it yet. Take a look at this site and try using some alternative mirror sites as they suggest. This site says to replace the default repository sites, but I'd recommend just commenting out the default repository in case you decide to go back to it and entering the new repository mirrors under the ones you just commented out. See the link below.

I have managed to kind of get around it by removing the infringing packages from the source list. Then I was able to do the first update. Then I went back and re-ticked the ones I have removed. It seems to work okay though I still have the odd issue.

I also recommend to not install any '3' rated updates unless you specifically require them, they have slowed down and made patchy my computer.

Fresh install of Mint 9 and it's working perfectly.

Happy again :D
