(solved) No video or mp3 sound after alsa update...

Post by ashki »

Sound for me was always soft from the beginning with all versions and variants of ubuntu's flavour, fluxbox mint proved to be no different. However i tried to improve that by updating alsa by following this guide : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1400798. I followed it up till the part that required pulse audio's removal. I was not sure if winedoors needs pulseaudio for sound and as such did not want to take the risk. The end result of that has been the fact that the following does not produce any sound :

1) vlc running a video file/ mp3

2) mplayer running a video/ audio file

This also applies to every other non browser based media player on my laptop. however wine and flash work just fine, Albeit still with soft sound. Is there any solution for this? and does winedoors need pulseaudio?

my aplay-l output :

Code: Select all

aplay -l

See if everything looks good with the sound levels by opening a terminal and using alsa mixer.
I had to tweak this once upon a time.

i had a similar problem before and it was caused because of a clash between pulse and alsa, if you remove pulse, you should be able to get sound again

Tried everything short of removing pulseaudio including ikey's code above. There is still no sound for mp3 files and video. Is pulseaudio really necessary for the winedoors application?. The really strange thing is that flash videos and flash games are unaffected and still able to play with sound.
