Hi, super noob here, and I'm trying to run the liveCD to test this out. I get a problem right after boot up. I choose Start Linux Mint, then the little loading bar bounces back and forth, then:

I've searched around, posted help requests, and everyone wants all the messages before "can't access tty..." plus my hardware. Then no one answers. I've been on an Ubuntu thread where like 7 different people are having this problem and also cannot find a solution.

Thanks in advance! BTW I booted the Ubuntu 6 LiveCD with no problems, but my mouse pointer became invisible. I only know when I'm hovering over a button because it lights up, and I use that as a reference. It sucked.

What that tells you is that the download is OK, and that's good. What we don't know is whether the CD came out OK or not.

Can you try the LiveCD out on another PC?

It sure works on another crappy comp that i have in the basement, but i got some Gnome error, 'like Activation of GnomeStartup.daemon timed out'. other than that it worked great. desktop showed, i could see the mouse pointer, internet worked, everything. So i guess the problem is with my comp. Any idea what?

I don't want to steer someone away from Mint, but if you've got broadband and it's no big deal to download/burn another distro, try PCLinuxOS and tell us what happens.
I've got a modern homebrew PC that refuses to run any Ubuntu-based distro. It always hangs on hardware identification. But PCLOS flew right thru.

The thing is I was running ubuntu fine from the liveCD. The only reason I want to try mint is because ubuntu wouldn't recognize my wireless adapter, and the mouse pointer was invisible, so i had a hard time seeing where to click.

Also, when i went to install ubuntu anyway, i had created an Ext3 partition using partitionmagic through windows. Then in ubuntu, gparted forced me to create a new ext3 partition, so i went ahead and ALMOST did that, until it showed a warning that all data on that hard disk will be deleted. I assumed that meant

my windows c:\ partition
my everything else d:\ partition
my linux swap space (empty)
and my linux ext3 partition (also empty)

so I didn't do it.

Once again, I'm a super noob, so I'd like a distro that's ideally as easy and functional as ubuntu seemed. I've tried lindows, xandros, fedora, and a couple others before, but i dont have a spare hard drive to back all my crap up, so i'm extra cautious when partitioning. If the linux doesn't have an easy partition tool, i can't use it. I'll try that pclinux tho. thanks. I really liked using mint on my other comp tho.

Weird that it works Live but not when installing. Not unheard of, but certainly frustrating.

I know what you mean about wireless. A friend had Ubuntu but we wiped it for Bea. Still don't have wireless but that may be operator error.

I've heard plenty of people say Partition Magic can cause problems with Linux. Others say it works fine. Have you tried GParted LiveCD?

The GPLCD guide is after the PCLOS guide. It's aimed at an all-Linux HDD but still gives you some idea how to move around in GPLCD even if you're dual-booting Windows.
Here's a write-up I did on how to take a screenshot from GPLCD in case you want to put an image up in the forum. Wait, I'm not sure you can do that in this forum. I don't see an obvious "attach" button. Anyway, screenshots are so easy with Linux (not quite as easy in GPLCD) that I've started printing screenshots instead of taking hand-written notes. A screenshot of your partitions and hd#'s will almost certainly come in handy later!

If you build your partitions first with GPLCD there'll be less confusion. Just mount the Ubuntu / to whichever partition you already formatted as ext3, whether it's primary or logical.
Too bad you don't have a spare HDD laying around that you can practice on. Much less stressful! [/img]
