I decided to use a M$oft windows program Norton ghost to backup the whole disk so I could then put it on to another disk to install lots of other programs on to the second copy and still have the first one untouched. So far sounds a good idea, I thought. So I backed it up to an usb external drive, then went for lunch came out forgot where I was and replaced the original with the copy ! Of course this messed up and now grub doesn't boot up and just sits there thumbing it's nose at me. Grub does not even start so what can I do other than never use Ghost again of course !
this is a copy of what is present in the grub menu.lst if it helps.....

Well I downloaded the Super Grub Disk to see if that could help at all and it did to a degree, it got the hard drive booting with help from the cd. Now it is saying that fsck died with exit status 4 ?
I do not know what to do now though so if anyone can help please do so.
Thanks a lot.

g0lrk,
I've been looking to do what you want to do for a while.
Basically, clone a bootable copy of your set-up. Am I right?
From what I understand a RAID drive might do it. But, this is a sort of dream of mine. An over night back-up of everything, then torture your system, but have that back-up.

Yes Adler that is what I was trying to do to a degree, but I messed up good style !
I have been looking for any Linux programs that can open .gho files so I can at least get some of my files back but not having much luck with that either. All boils down to me trying to put the same image onto the same disk by doing to many things at once. Must say in my defense that I cannot see very well here so that is my excuse, though really I was busy doing other things and simply forgot to change disk. Hence the I am stupid title. But really on M$oft windows Ghost is such a superb program there should be one for Linux somewhere I think.
I have resigned myself to lost data unless I re-install M$oft windows and ghost for windows which allows you to look inside the .gho files and extract the files one at a time if needed.

I wonder if Ghost For Linux: http://freshmeat.net/projects/g4l/ can help you? Never tried it myself, but it's supposed to be a close approximation of Ghost.
Ghost for Linux ?
Bob,
Looked at that page and that seems quite interesting will download it and check it out many thanks indeed for the url and lets hope it is as good as Ghost for M$oft Windows.
Thanks a lot.
