Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe Sound Problems - Solved

just re-installed Mint due to a major cock-up yesterday see http://www.linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4085 and since I put Mint back on all seems OK as of yesterday and all was working 100%. Turned the 'pewter on today and there is no sound at all in fact the mixer is muted and double clicking brings this message up "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found"
I don't know why as all worked ok as I said when I turned it off last night as anyone any ideas please !

Two solutions are mentioned repeatedly for this error
1) Reboot
2) sudo gst-register
#2 seems to rebuild a database (register) for gstreamer

Do you see the sound card in Device manager today?
Could have died....
and
what does cat /proc/asound/modules give you ?

Already tried rebooting thats what's alerted me to this problem as it was alright last night when turning the 'pewter off but this morning not got any sound at all. Tried the command you said sudo gst-register and reply from the terminal was I quote sudo: gst-register: command not found. So do not know what is next Husse and sorry to bother you over this matter.
Yes the sound card is in device manager and if I type lspci -v -l it shows on there as

Re: No volume control elements and/or devices found.
It Could Also Be A Simple Problem
Your Account Doesn't Have The Proper Rights...
Or Because You Installed An Update It Must Have
Deleted Your Old Settings.

If Your Sound Works Before Then It Should Now
Chances Are Your Computer Has The Correct Drivers

Go To Systems-----users And Groups Then On The User Privileges Tab
Scroll Down The List And Click "use Audio Devices" Then Close

Hello again Nick, hope you are Ok (ish !)
Went into Systems-Users and Groups then user priveleges tab and it is showing already as use Audio devices.
Looked already through what I can of the Ubuntu forum for sound problems certainly ones relating to my type of mobo and not found anything Nick.
If you cast your mind back a short time Nick we ahd a similar problem last time whilst trying to get sstv working and I cannot remember how that time it started working 100% ?

Is anything muted at bottom of volume control? If you open volume control then go to preferences can you check all boxes to bring up more controls? then try sliders/unmuting, on mine I had to bring up capture feedback slider!!

Also have you tried swapping line in for mike in from rig ""

Nick, looked at those links you posted and nothing new in there helped me I am sorry to say. Can't understand really because this is a new install because of the mess I made of a backup, read earlier post for a laugh ! And I had the sound ok then when re-started next day all the mixer had was a big red cross on it and no sound.

Sound does still work ok as tried the live mint disk and all ok through that.

For all commands to type in you use the terminal.
The cat ..... command I gave you will tell if the drivers are still there

typed the command in the terminal as you said Husse cat /proc/asound/modules
and this is what I got in reply.....

So I imagine it is a driver problem then Husse ?
So what driver do I require and where do I acquire it from ?

Just found on a Ubuntu forum a command called aplay after running it on my pewter got this

Well it does pay off reading and reading some more as I carried on with the messages on the ubuntu forum, quick correction there are 621 messages NOT 621 pages sorry misread that one, anyway downloaded the latest alsa driver. Version 1.0.14rc4 after installing this which was very easy, again after reading the information, then doing modprobe snd-xxxx' where xxxx is the name of my card which in this instance is snd-hda-intel. Then voila all of a sudden I have sound !!!
I rebooted to check it didn't disappear and no it is still there so that is how I sorted this pewter's hiccup out.

Glad it works. Take some time to think about what you could have done to kick out the driver (module in Linux language) so you don't get the problem again

Not too sure what I keep doing but when ever I install, which like I say just had to again, the darned thing doesn't find the sound card, which is annoying as it does on the live cd.
Have made a written sheet on how-to so that if it needs to install again for any reason I will have reasonably easy for me info on how to. Just got to remember where to put the darned thing now, probably in mobo box which I always save and know where it is.
Like I say many thanks Husse and slowly I will learn more about this os, I hope ?
