setup printer in printer dialog

Post by shengchieh »

I having trouble setup-ing my printer. I added ML-2510
(a Samsung laser printer "serial" connected to the desktop)
to "Printer configuration" window (menu -> system - >
system tools -> printing). This printer shows up in the
CUPS control center obtained at http://localhost:631 .

It does not show up in the printer manager (menu -> mint
config -> XFCE 4 print manager) or the print dialog (menu
-> mint config -> XFCE 4 print dialog).

I can't print any file in mousepad because the print
dialog shows no ML-2510 option. I can print to a postscript
file, view it by document viewer, and print from document
viewer.

How can I make the printer to "show up" in the printer manager
and print dialog?

I suspect this a specifically LM fluxbox issue - other distros
work fine. I already searched the LM Fluxbox sub-forum and
googled for "Fluxbox setup printer" and found nothing. I also
looked in the wiki - Fluxbox section.

I suspect the problem is trivial to fix. Can you tell me how
to fix this or point me to a link?

p.s. After trying various LXDE distros (LM, Fedora, wattOS),
I ended up with Linux Mint Fluxbox 8. I guess this
dinosaur desktop can't handle a desktop environment.

I usually STOP, when the printer does work
--so if it works within cups at localhost:631, and I can print and it has a good driver to print with, I call it done.

No. That's not a solution. I want the printer to work for mousepad, etc. When one needs to print in
mousepad, it is possible to call up the print window that document viewer call? If so, then it'll
be a decent workaround. I'm not interested in saving as a postscript file and print in document viewer
every time.

Another question. Are there other text editor that has its own print dialog?

Here's my finding so far.

yes = can print on ML-2510
no = doesn't print on ML-2510

GIMP - yes
Oo - yes
FF - yes
document viewer - yes
TB - yes
SM - yes
mousepad - no

I can't think of what else I would print often from. Only mousepad is giving me trouble. Is there another text editor that won't use the printer dialog
used by mint config? Or do I need to try them all?

I'll answer my own a question. Both jedit and nedit allow you print (on ML-2510). lp (or lpr) works fine too, so theoretically printing in vi should be fine too.
jedit is an overkill but alittle faster than Oo. nedit is tailored for programmers. I haven't tried many else - didn't want to add libraries especially KDE or GNOME
libraries.
