USB 3g modem not detecting in linux mint 8

Hi Team,

I am great fan of linux mint and looking forward for the mint isadora version. Great job guys..
I have an issue with my usb 3g modem not being detected in my mint helena version. I have the package gnome ppp and wvdial. i have tried a few solutions given in the net
like running modprobe command using the product and vendor parameters. tried manually editing the /etc/wvdial.conf file and tried using the gnome ppp dialer. my modem is not being detected.

kindly let me know if you require any information regarding this. Please find some information below which might be of some information to you. please let me know and help me resolve this issue. It works perfectly on windows xp though.

With USB 3G Modems not all are supposrted by every Linux Kernel.

And if this Modem has a memory chip included, the Kernel will first identify it as an External Memory device.
You would then, need to install the "usb_modeswitch" application. It is in the Synaptic Manager already, just 'click' to install.

It is a USB 3g modem manufacturer is CAPITEL. I have seen in one another forum with a similar issue who was using ubuntu 9.10 and was resolved. I have done the same as instructed. Installed usbmodeswitch. As the usb modem is detected as a cd rom i had to install the modeswitch and please check the file below.

sudo gedit /usr/sbin/initmodem.sh
Copy following in it and replace your Vendor and Product ID where ever required.

I have modified the same. And ran the command on terminal as root . "sudo /usr/sbin/initmodem.sh" and was able to swap the device. It was detected as a wireless broadband access point. But was unable to connect to the same. P

I was unable to connect using wvdial or gnome ppp.
please find the users complete detailed solution below. Kindly let me know if i should try installing ubuntu 9.1 as it has worked in the case of the below user. But i still have a doubt as linux mint is also based on the same ubuntu 9.1 kernel.

and I'll share it so if someone face the same problem, he/she won't have to waste his/her time....

So, I think the problem is that, the new USB Modem from "Capitel" has inbuilt driver for windows. When you plug in the device in your computer it is shown as a virtual CD ROM. Hence the Linux (Ubuntu 9.10 in my case) can not figure out how to use it as a modem. So, to overcome this problem we you have to flip the device from virtual CD ROM mode to USB Modem mode. To do that, you need to have usb_modeswitch installed on your system.
Download u8sb_mode switch from here Guests cannot see links in the messages. Please register in our forum for free by clicking here to see links. and install it on your system [First install "usb-modeswitch-data" and then "usb_modeswitch-x.x.x"].

Also before doing anything further I would suggest you to configure Network Manager for your device.
Open Network Manager, go to edit connections and then click on tab of Mobile Broadband. Here, click on "Add". You will get a window saying "Set up a Mobile Broadband Connection". Click Forward. Select Country. When You reach "Select Your Provider" DO NOT SELECT BSNL FROM THE LIST. Click on radio button below that list which says "I can't find my provider and I wish to enter manually". Enter some name e.g. BSNL and select second option "My provider uses CDMA Technology (1xRTT, EVDO)" from the list. Now in next window enter your "Username" and "Password" (your telephone number for both). Keep "Number" as #777. Select "Connect Automatically". click on "Apply" and "Close" the Network Manager.

Now again let's get back to flipping the USB Modem from Virtual CD ROM to USB Modem. Do the following.
Attach USB Modem to the computer.
Open the Terminal.
Type command lsusb and enter.
You will get the Vendor and Product ID fo your device.
Something like this: "Bus 005 Device 003: ID 1c9e:9e00" (First one is vendor id [1c9e] and second is product id [9e00]).
Note it down.

Now type following command in terminal
sudo gedit /usr/sbin/initmodem.sh
Copy following in it and replace your Vendor and Product ID where ever required.

Save it and close it.
Do a chmod +x /usr/sbin/initmodem.sh to make it executable.

Run the following command.
sudo /usr/sbin/initmodem.sh

After successful run wait for some time and you will see that your BSNL Modem will appear in Network Manager's Wireless Broadband list.
It should automatically get connected or else try to connect to it by clicking on it in the list.

am having same problem of bsnl capitel 3g qualcomm cdma technology connection problem;
my lap is acer aspire 4710,centrino duo,1.73ghz,2gbram,
dual booting with debian 6.0.7 gnome and linuxmint 14 cinnamon

[(debian connects automatically after first detail scribbling,good speed,stable network connectivity.)
here lsusb shows Bus 002 Device 004: ID 1c9e:9e00]

linuxmint doesnt recognize my device;usb_modeswitch,tcl are installed,

i must say linuxmint usb_modeswitvh is of 2012 whereas debian is still in 2010
