i put an autohide panel on top of normal panel: can't boot

Hi,

This here is my desktop configuration:

I tried to move panel 3 on top of panel 2, like this:

I thought that when i place my mouse on the very top of panel 2, panel 3 (which is set to autohide) would pop up. instead, the computer froze. when i booted back up and logged in, the desktop would not appear. i tried failsafe gnome, and got the same result. xterm is the only thing that works. I am using Mint 9 RC with all the latest updates. is there a terminal command i can use to remove panel 3, return it to its original position, or otherwise solve the problem?

if you need more details, i'll be glad to provide them. i know, i draw like a 2 year old.

please help me, i'm tired of using a live cd of kubuntu 8.04!

Open Nautilus, browse to your Home folder, press CTRL + H to reveal all hidden directories. Rename the ".gconf" folder as ".gconf.old", and then restart X (log out and log back in, or reboot). Your desktop will be back to default again...if there's any specific themes or stuff you still want from your old desktop configuration, they're all in the old .gconf folder.

So to do what vincent suggested in xterm, try

Code: Select all

mv ~/.gconf ~/.gconf.old

Then restart X.

Oh, oops, I forgot about the fact that the OP can only login via xterm.

Whew! This saved my bacon! I just installed Mint 9, repositioned the bottom panel to show on the left of the screen, enabled autohide, and lost the menu! It would not come back.

I managed to get to a terminal window and run Firefox. Searched the forums and found this.

Here's hoping for no more weird disasters tonight!!
