[Resolved] LM8 just stopped working

Post by ddalley »

The LM8 Main install was working fine, but when I tried to boot it today, it couldn't get very far into the boot procedure.
It gets to the LM logo on the black screen, then times out.

I have checked the hard drive and it seems to be fine (I can boot from an old LM6 install on the same drive), so I presume the problem is partition-related.

I tried to repair grub, but it reported the grub command wasn't available.
Hmmm... now what?

Does anyone have any idea of how to recover this install?

OK, I tried to repair/replace GRUB2 today (using this and this), but it seems the process needs a device.map file which does not exist in /boot/grub.

At the moment, when the computer reboots, it goes to a GRUB shell. ;^(

I'm in way over my head and I am getting no responses here.

At the moment, this hard drive still has two LM installs (LM6 and LM8) but no boot partitions and when I try to reinstall GRUB 2, all I get is the "sh: grub" shell. The LM8 install doesn't even show up with a sudo blkid.

If someone who knows what they are doing could help me, I'd really appreciate it.

Hi, have you tried to see if you can boot using the super grub disk? http://www.supergrubdisk.org/

Can you get into LM6 still or is that broken now too?

Can you see your LM8 files from LM6 or from the live CD?

Re: LM8 just stopped working

I made a SuperGRUB disk, but it is older and may not work with GRUB 2 (not sure, I don't know what to do with it).

First, LM8 just stopped working, then, after trying to fix it, the LM6 install wouldn't boot. The files in both partitions are still there, but when I tried to use mintBackup, only 1 in 5 files were actually backed up because of permission or other conflicts. No partition is marked as bootable, right now.

I believe I had a similar problem to yours, but I fixed it. You can read my post here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 26#p274526

Hope that helps!

I wish I could see that screen again.

Things have gotten much more serious than with what you had to deal.

I just found some GRUB 2 shell commands, but before I try to use them, should I try to recover my LM6 install first?

AKAIK if you boot from the supergrub disk, you should be able to use it too see your disotros and boot them if they are ok. How do you mean recover LM6?

When I tried to recover my LM8 install, I inadvertently took out my LM6 install, too.

Could you load a live CD and post the results of the boot info script? http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

That is an interesting/useful looking script!
Thanks!

I ran this from a USB stick running an older Ubuntu and I haven't scrutinized the results myself yet.
I will do that after I return home.

Re: LM8 just stopped working

Post by ddalley »

OK, I got GRUB 2 reinstalled, by the looks of things.

I have no idea why it didn't work earlier and I still have no idea why LM8 just stopped working, in the first place.

The update also seems to have found the LM6, so I will test that later, with a reboot.

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
[sudo] password for donald:
Generating grub.cfg ...
Found Debian background: linuxmint.png
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic
Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin
Found Linux Mint 6 Felicia - Main Edition (6) on /dev/sda2

Re: LM8 just stopped working

Post by beefstu »

IF that has worked and you can now boot into Felicia, can you do another boot info script?

There are a few confusing things on there, Do you have Windows Vista installed? At the bottom of your menu.lst from your Ubuntu partition, it seems to say Vista is on sda1 or 2 but thats where Mint 8 is.

I think (assuming Vista doesn't exist) you have Mint 8 and 6 on one hdd and ubuntu 9.04 on another?

The grub.cfg seems to still reference mint 8 but i'd assume that has now disappeared. When you boot, what version of grub do you see? it should say version 0.97 or 1.97 or similar on the screen.

Don't worry too much about what systems were shown before.
You may even shake your head over sda1 now, too (I know I would).

Both LM6 and LM8 seem to be booting OK now, at least so far, and that is the important thing.
