[Solved] Desktop spinning around

Postby homebaze on Thu Jul 15, 2010 5:13 am

Hey Community!

I friend of mine is using on his old PC with an old AMD Processor and only 256 MB RAM the RC version of Mint LXDE for a couple of weeks. I'm his PC maintainer  and therefore solving his problems. At the beginning I had some issues, which I was able to solve by myself, but this last one is tricky and I'm not able to find the solution or even I'm afraid I cannot describe the problem properly. Nevertheless I hope you'll understand my issue. So let's start...
When I boot up the computer (blazingly fast 40s!!), everything seems to be fine, but after a couple of minutes (3-5min) the mouse pointer starts to move horizontally, from 1 desktop to all 4 just spinning around (and of course changing the desktop). Sometimes it even starts (??) some applications or the "About LXPanel" Window or just PcManFM. I changed the numbers of desktops from 4 to 1, but it didn't help much. I'm able to repress this strange behaviour by hitting the ESC-button, but after a couple of minutes it starts again.
What can be the problem? Is it an openbox-problem, LXDE or is something missing that I need to install or some strange setting? What other information do you need to help me solve the problem? Can someone reproduce my problem or report something similar?
I really like the LXDE version and I think it's a wonderful version for this old pc, but to work on it, is at this time impossible. My friend uses also the Main version on his newer laptop and I thought it would be nice, that he can use something similar on his old pc as he had XP installed on it, which booted up for 10minutes and to work on it was a similar pain in the a** but on the other hand the desktop was not spinning around :D

Check your keyboard sounds like you got some sticky buttons.

I will check the keyboard on it "filthyness" :) but do you even can change the desktops with the keyboard, I mean are there by default any keyboard shortcuts? I wasn't aware of that. I'm not hitting any keys at that point and as I was saying, it certainly did not do any "special effects" in the XP environment.

I don't know the default shortcuts in Mint LXDE, but I'm sure they exist . If the keyboard was jacked it could have shorted buttons, you wouldn't need to hit anything. Just a thought really, I'm not saying that I know that's what it is but it easy enough to test by hooking up a different keyboard.

Double-check if this is a hardware problem by bringing (a different) your keyboard to his computer. If you conclude it is the keyboard, try cleaning it
if sticky (or was sticky). If old, just buy a new keyboard - it's not that expensive.

Ok guys, thx. It was indeed a hardware problem, but not the keyboard was sticky, rather the mouse was weird. I checked both of them and realized, that the mouse made the "special" effects, including the spinning desktop and poping up informations, I don't need
