what is the best bit torrent client??

..not necessarily the best, but what are your favorites? explain...
I would have loved to have tried Deluge from what Ive heard about it, but I was unable to figure out how to get it to work unfortunately...

I used to use operas built in client with windows, however, now that Im using mint opera wont seem to download the ENTIRE torrent, just the package in which transmission picks up the rest... can I change that perhaps?

from your guys experience, what is the fastest downloading client you all have used?

Deluge is by far the best, what where to problems you had?

If you are using Opera then there is no need for a torrent client as you already have one. Which version are you using because it works just fine for me here:

If that for some reason doesn't work it might be because in Opera, Tools, Preferences, Advanced, Downloads, you have set some other torrent program to load.

If you don't like the Opera torrent thing I would try Transmission - it is fast, small, does not get in your face, and doesn't have a load of superfluous bells and whistles.

I recently had trouble using deluge so I installed the latest version from the launchpad.https://launchpad.net/~deluge-team/+archive/ppa
The only other thing I did was port forward around 8 ports to download and 5 to upload through my software firewall and my external firewall. Does opera support encryption? This is one of my main reasons for choosing deluge.

When I first downloaded Deluge, I figured since Mint is Ubuntu based that it would work (yes Im still new to linux)...
It downloaded and installed, but when I clicked on the icon, nothing happened.

Carl, could you possibly help me understand how codes work? I typed sudo apt-get install deluge into the terminal and it installed correctly and now it works... When I previously tried to install deluge I downloaded the file from the internet after selecting the ubuntu distro?
..so I guess my question is, if any program has been built for linux, can I simply re-type the code "sudo apt-get install" in the terminal with the program name following?


oh, and to fix the torrent client built into Opera, I had to go to preferences, advanced, downloads and then add and for MIME type: application/x-BitTorrent with file extension: torrent and now it works =]

Deluge is great. It is my favourite torrent program on Linux AND Windows. I force outbound encryption and employ the built in blocklist. I have not gotten any stuff from my ISP even once.

Now if only we could get onion routing torrents.....

My best torrent client is Utorrent client. It helps me in downloading the applications faster.

I agree, Utorrent is the best choice for my opinion

I think Deluge does everything uTorrent does, and it does it on Windows, Mac, AND Linux.

Also, uTorrent was bought out by the big media corporations, so you may get busted by them if they so choose. Deluge is Open Source and does not have any dangers like this built in.

Deluge is quite good. But Ktorrent still kicks it's arse. Ktorrent has much more control to offer, I find it much more friendly, giving me more of what I want. Deluge comes in at a close 2nd place, lacking some of the control Ktorrent offers me.

Deluge is a good client, especially if you're used to uTorrent. I've also recently fallen in love with the relatively new (and perhaps obscure) Tixati. I haven't tried Ktorrent or qBittorrent, but I've heard a lot of good things about them as well.

I like Vuze. The only thing is that the application startup is a bit slow (what can you expect from Java). Some people would say its too bloated, but I just love all the features and statistics it provides. I like to use it with the ONO Plugin, which finds nearby peers to accelerate download istead of just connecting to peers at random. I am always able to max out my 30 mbit link with that.

So I'm stuck with Java-bloat Vuze. 500mb+ mem used for running 3 torrents at a time, after following the low mem instructions

No idea what "Bell Sympatico's sandvine" is, but both Deluge and Transmission include encryption, you just have to enable it. I mostly use Deluge or Ktorrent (Ktorrent is more feature-rich), but never had a problem with either.

Bell Sympatico is an Internet provider in Canada. Sandvine is used by Comcast and Bell to inhibit torrents. Deluge and Transmission do have encryption but apparently it's not as good as what Vuze and Lince has as Vuze/Linse are able to defeat sandvine and be able to download above 50kbps and the others are not.

For some reason I am not aware of, I seem to always get the best connection and download speeds with Transmission.
