Mint XFCE (from 6 till 7) is best for me and most suitable. But Clem, can't you fix the "Splash screen resolution" by yourself? Or with the community?

Now wait for final Mint XFCE 9...
P.S. Mint 7 XFCE was the best, fastest and correct release imho...
P.S.S. Is it possible to return old Welcome screen a-la Mint 7 XFCE? The new one looks ugly and inconvenient.

I'm on the download now.

I'll verify MD5Sums, create the Live, and take it for a spin.

Thanks to Each Contibutor and GREAT JOB Merlwiz.

Installed the RC from http://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/Linux/LinuxM ... c-i386.iso
:
on page 3 of that thread as soon as it appeared.
Unfortunately, I was on an old W98 machine at the time.
The file contains the miheld.ibc trojan which runs in IE and FF, including in Mint Linux 9 installed from the download. Relatively easy to fix in Linux but days/weeks to clean from W98. It's got the lot, keyloggers, redirects, you-name-it.

SCARY!

I'm glad Clem got it up on Mint Main. I seen the post the other day, but I got busy all of a sudden. I got a reply from Merlwiz telling me to navigate a mirror. By the time I got home, spent time with kids and put them to bed Clem had it out.

I'll definately be more careful, and only get ISO's from Clem's List.

Thanks for The Warning,
Dave

Yea right how can you get a virus from installing Linux.
Visited the site and my anti-virus didn't detect anything.
The ISOs have been on my hard drive for days and the anti virus had no problem with it.
I have installed with mint4win and the anti-virus has said nothing.
I have ZoneAlarm Extreme Security installed on my Windows 7 install.
You must have gotten it somewhere else.

This guy has only 2 posts and they said he got a trojan from downloading an ISO.
ISOs are not executable so they can't install anything.
Windows can't read the partition Linux is installed on so it wouldn't be able to find anything.
There is no way he got the trojan from installing Linux Mint.

actually I'd be blaming him running Windows 98 at this day and age. It may be the best OS for backward compatibility(aside from Windows 2000 & XP) with apps & games decades ago but running it online means allowing yourself to be infected.

The "How to upgrade to a newer release" tutorial on the Linux Mint Community website should have the information you're looking for.

Hi Merlwiz,

Great job ! Many thanks. :D

It’s more than a Release Candidate for me.
since two days, everything works fine ;
So, I use it like my main OS now…

I'll also install on the PC of my wife.
We are two "Xfce-Minters" here !

The notes refer to the splash screen problem but they don't mention the recent problem of trying to boot and login, in that many attempts were necessary, using a previous RC.

Has this specific problem been fixed?

Thanks for the insight Merlwiz.

I'm still kind of gun-shy from using Windows for so long.

By the way, Great RC. I installed side by side with Mint Main and Windows 7. A couple of more things to find replacements for, and Windows will be going away.

Thanks Again,
Dave

Great job, merlwiz! The XFCE edition of Mint 9 is the best distro that I have come across. I'm diggin' the default menu and control center. Thanks to you and the Mint gang for all of your efforts.

Is it more RAM effective than Mint 8 xfce?

I'm not too sure what you're asking, so I'm going to guess and reply that Linux Mint 9 Xfce 64-bit can leverage more of your RAM than its previous & current 32-bit versions. Obviously you'd need a 64-bit PC, and 4+ GBs of RAM for this to be evident.

I meant does Mint 9 Xfce consume lesser RAM than Mint 8 Xfce?
( I don't think it will).
The question I asked is because I already have Mint 8 installed and absolutely love the looks and functionality (as well as the fact taht it worls perfectly on 512MB ram).
HOWEVER, it doesn't offer resolution higher than 1024x768 on my setup.
Mint 9 (main / lxde) does!

Any idea when the final will be out on this? Rumors, smoke signals, etc?
I've been using the RC since it came out and it seems really tight. I was just wondering if I should bother transferring much media (quite a lot) onto this partition or just hold out for the final? I generally do a clean install.
Nice distro in any case.
