Did you install it as per the wiki?

Fragadelic, looks like your Remastersys wiki got hacked again. I just put it back together.

900i,

I've actually done it according to the latest WiKi.

I added the repository, actually un-checked what was there in Cassandra to do the download. Then

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

I prefer "aptitude" to "apt-get". Your install instructions look like they where KDE oriented.

I'm not sure how to launch this. Is there a GUI?

Guys,

Did I get caught in something?

I'd like to know how in implement Remastersys.

Either with command line, or with a GUI.

900i,

I think this is a killer app!

I've not tried to implement it, but see great utility here.

Thanks.

900i,

I'm going to try this over the weekend.

But before I do I'm trying to think my way through this.

1. If I run remastersys will this write to my HDD? I've got a 160Gb drive on my Notebook, and will run out of space.

2. I've got a large Seagate Drive that I can send all my goodness to. Can I use that as a target?

As you can imagine I can save my /Home folders, but never seem to be able to catch the hidden files that hold my Passwords, Log-Ins to all my Firefox / Swiftfox Bookmarks.

A Fresh install of any version of an OS is always the better way to go, that I know. But -- again -- I'm trying to think my way through this.

Any ideas?

Fragadelic is the developer of this app, I have only run this a few times with varying degrees of success. so I am not all that experienced with it. Others on the forum such as Husse and Scorp123 may be able to guide you in the right direction with this. :)

Backup

Postby jhouse59 on Fri Aug 24, 2007 5:52 am

I tried to make a backup of my install. It wants to get on the network and get info. Is there a way to disable the network till I make a backup? I've made a LiveDVD. I hope it has the updates. The DVD I made is around 800mb and will work on my laptop. Can someone help me with the network?

900i,

I've also tried other apps with limited success.

Celena will be coming soon, and would like to get better insight into this e.g. saving things to make the new install that much easier. Especially regarding saving my /Home File so that when I up-date I don't have to install all my Bookmarks and Passwords again. That's my primary goal.

Secondly, I'd like to be able to back-up my [/i]whole system, when I want to try something weird e.g. dual booting, adding VMWare or some other nonsense.

It has been a while since a tortured my system. LOL!

Any idea who has been doing it and what they have been doing?

I've been extremely busy with work and the family this summer.

Hi All,

I think that remastersys would make a great topic for those coming to Linux Mint, wanting to save their original Linux set-up. Or, wanting to jump to Celena.

I'm not sure if using remastersys will result in a bootable DVD, or boot from a saved-to external HDD.

Trust me these are questions that I've asked in a lot of Forums.

For me, I just want a fully saved /Home folder with all those Hidden Files that would include Bookmarked username / passwords.

I'm actually toying around with focusing on the backup portion and dropping the distribution option altogether as it seems to be causing a lot of headaches.

I'm at the point where I just recommend folks use reconstructor for distributable versions and remastersys for backing up.

I have a little bit more cleanup work to do on the script and I'd like to finish the gui as well.

My time is very limited so I have to pick and choose what I work on.

Fragadelic,

I myself have given up on trying to find an app that will give me a bootable DVD, or boot from my Seagate drive after saving my PC HDD.

I can't even imagine what you've been through!

Saving /Home might be a good idea. IMHO.
