How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?
Hello everyone. I've just installed LMDE and might say very impressive. This is my first debian distro after using Ubuntu for a long while. But my problem is that I don't know how to install the nvidia driver. It's easier with ubuntu but really want to get the hang of debian for awhile.

Re: How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?
I installed with synaptic: nvidia-kernel-dkms. This one took the rest for nvidia as dependecies.
Also i installed: nvidia-settings and nvidia-xconfig
After install i ran as root nvidia-xconfig.
Rebooted and working.
From memory and experience this can only be done with Debian stable.
With testing it will give missing dependecies, which are in unstable/experimental or nat available at all
As testing is frozen, it works in testing.
When LMDE is using the new upcoming Debian-testing this wil change.

Re: How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?
I currently run Debian testing on my main machine and have absolutely no problems with the NVidia drivers.hns wrote:From memory and experience this can only be done with Debian stable.

Re: How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?
This is the easyest way to install the drivers http://gingerbread-man.co.cc/node/10 I personally do not change the drivers name as there is no need. and read the nvidia instructionsnelson2006 wrote:Hello everyone. Re: How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?
This will work, but is not the recommended Debian way. The next time your kernel updates your X will not work and you will have to reinstall the driver. If you do it the way described by hns the driver will be adapted to the new kernel automatically.mandog wrote:This is the easyest way to install the drivers http://gingerbread-man.co.cc/node/10 I personally do not change the drivers name as there is no need. and read the nvidia instructionsnelson2006 wrote:Hello everyone. Re: How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?
Doesn't work on mine. After reboot, all I get is a blank screen and a blinking cursor. Don't know what to do next.hns wrote:I installed with synaptic: nvidia-kernel-dkms. This one took the rest for nvidia as dependecies.

Re: How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?
I use the Debian way method and I get an error when I start to build the kernel module from source. The error asks me to update the sources.list file with update repositories. Should I add the actual Debian repositories to the sources.list file. Perhaps this would help during the build of the kernel module for the nvidia drivers. Did anyone have problems building the kernel module?
Re: How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?
Something went wrong. Pres Ctrl-Alt-F1. This opens a new console. Log in as user. Then become root with: sudo -s.KenWeiLL wrote:Doesn't work on mine. Easiest way is to install now mc (midnight commander) with apt-get install mc.
Start up mc.
Go to /etc/X11/XF86config. Open this file for editing with F4. Find Section Device. Change nvidia to nv. Save and close. Close mc.
Reboot with ctrl-alt-del
When back figure out what went wrong. Wrong nvidia-file. There are two.
When you are in mc, you can have a look at /var/log/xorg and see what it says about failure.
Also possible that for some reason de nvidia module was not loaded. (I had this with sound) If so, you can load this with modprobe nvidia
Also you can check if the module is loaded with: lsmod | grep nvidia
Succes
Re: How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?
@yoooley
be sure to check that you have build-essential installed from Synaptic Package Manager.
and when it is asking you to update the sources . . . that means " sudo apt-get update" from the terminal (without quotes of course) before you attempt the driver install.

Re: How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?
I guess I've been spoiled by the "Hardware Drivers" icon and the automatic search and installation that this feature does. Hopefully something similar can be added to LMDE at some point.

http://gingerbread-man.co.cc/node/10
but when im installing i get this:
(i have the same driver on lm9.
on the nvidia site thats the one)
i hit ok
then this comes up
when i hit no, the installation continues:
i know this error message from lm9, i had to disable nouveau,
when i do it like in lm9:
i get the same errors after a restart
thats the nvidia-installer.log:
hope some one can help me with this!
anyway thanks for reading

but when im installing i get this:

Re: How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?
It needs to be added! DO NOT INSTALL ANY DRIVER! UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! Its too damn easy to [mess] up your system. Ask me how i know.jalcradus wrote:I guess I've been spoiled by the "Hardware Drivers" icon and the automatic search and installation that this feature does. Hopefully something similar can be added to LMDE at some point.

Do it the "Debian Way" Debian Wiki - http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers
Or the simple easy way, use smxi.
Graphics: Card nVidia G96 [GeForce 9400 GT] X.Org 1.7.7 Res: 1280x1024@50.0hz
GLX Renderer GeForce 9400 GT/PCI/SSE2 GLX Version 3.3.0 NVIDIA 260.19.06 Direct Rendering Yes

Re: How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?
Wonderful, this worked for me too! I can now finally use a monitor resolution that doesn't hurt my eyes so much. Only thing that still doesn't seem to work is Compiz: I tried checking the "wobbly windows" checkbox to test it, but nothing happens. Anyway, I'm glad to have "normal" screen resolution again. Thanks!hns wrote:I installed with synaptic: nvidia-kernel-dkms.
