I have a IP5200R but used the IP5200 driver via CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.5 and was able to successfully install and print the test page while it was connected via USB. However, I am still having difficulty connecting to it and printing over wireless connection. I saw one post in another forum that claims to have done it successfully, but trying the same method did not work.

Is there another method for setting up wireless printing?

Go to synaptic package manager (probably in the system command menu - I'm not using fluxbox anymore) and install gutenprint.

I think this is the package you are looking for http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/cups-driver-gutenprint

[edit] p.s. obviously you would search for it in the package manager and install from there...

Well, cups-driver-gutenprint version: 5.2.5-0ubuntu1 is what I have. It would not find the printer wirelessly. I had to connect the printer to my laptop via USB2.0 A-B cable. Then I just went to the menu and went to Administration>>Printing. From there, From there, you can either go to the Printing menu, Server>>New>>Printer, or below that there is an "+Add" button. click the drop down arrow and click printer. This pulls up the New Printer window and asks you to select a device. Before I had plugged in the USB cable, the only options that would show up were "Generic CUPS-PDF Printer" or "Other", and then "Network Printer" below that with a few options to choose from. None of those are relevant. After I plugged in the USB cable and clicked Add Printer again, Canon iP5200R showed up as an option above the "Generic CUPS-PDF Printer" option. Just choose that and it should be pretty straight forward from there.

As I mentioned before though, even though it is now recognized and prints when it is plugged in, I have been unable to get it to print wirelessly. Some people have been able to get it to work by right clicking on the printer and clicking "Duplicate." Then go to the properties of the duplicated and change the Device URI from "usb://Canon/iP5200R" to "socket://192.168.1.101", or whatever the wireless IP Address is that is assigned to your printer by your router. I'm not sure why this does not work for me if that is, in fact, a valid method to enable wireless printing for this printer. My only guess right now is that it might have something to do with the fact that I'm connecting to a wired router through a wireless access point, as opposed to directly connecting to a wireless router. I have no idea why that should matter though. It might be irrelevant. I dunno.

Anyways, I hope this helps. I'm not trying to come across as though I am assuming you are completely clueless, and don't know anything. I'm just trying to be overly detailed so that there will be as little confusion as possible (if not for you, then for anyone else that may have this question and see this thread later).

If this does not work, do a quick search in Synaptic Package Manager for "guten" and post up the list of what it says you already have installed. You should have "gutenprint-locales" and "libgutenprint2". I'm not aware of anything else you would need but it cant hurt to verify.

Canon does not support Linux, however..

Ubuntu, IP500R..

Apart from getting the CUPS + gutenprint driver running, here is an how-to, dealing with the source files..
http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Canon_Pixma_Series

Ignore Gentoo's emerge options, that takes a formatted source file and installs it onto a Gentoo system
--just pay attention to the source files, and their locations..

Turboprint is also mentioned
--a commercial product

--a commercial product, that may support that printer correctly on Linux..

Just thought I'd provide an update here. There were a bunch of package updates for CUPS and guntenprint this afternoon for Maverick (libs, drivers, GUIs, etc.). With these new updates, the printer manager found my printer over wireless connection and now successfully prints wirelessly.
