Hi everyone,
well, it's happened at last - total satisfaction with Mint 9. Having tried (and battled) for years to get a truly excellent Linux running on my Bitza PC, I gave up and loaded onto my laptop.
Now I finally understand what many many posts have said - Linux is superb. Mint installed in 30 mins, took the WiFi drivers first time and is awesome!!!! Startup is just SO fast - shut down is fastest ever. Additional apps downloaded fast and installed perfectly first time. I'm totally blown away and have not used Windows for at least a month. I finally have the confidence to promote Mint openly as a better than Windows option - but only where the hardware will allow.
Perhaps the focus on Linux promotion should be on ensuring that the hardware is compatible. After all, I am now much more inclined to buy new kit in order to have the fantastic Linux experience rather than spend hours, weeks, months of frustration and failure trying to make the wrong hardware work. Free Linux means that the money is more likely to be available.
Looking forward to getting to know you all much better from now on.
I'm loving it.....

Re: I'm loving it.....
The hardware compatibility has always been my only real gripe. i love gaming and Linux just isn't the system for that....yet. I am learning C programming right now and I plan on expanding that into other program languages so that I might help improve this relationship. But we also need to get the big software companies to take Linux seriously. But welcome and I am glad you are enjoying it.

Welcome winlinuser. Glad you are enjoying the Mint experience. We also need for the hardware manufacturers to get on board and provide proper drivers for linux. But like you said, in a year or so when I am ready to buy a newer and more powerful laptop, I will pick it based on its compatibility with linux. So far I find HP is one of the best to "just work" with linux.
