Can't Install Google Earth in Linux Mint Debian (SOLVED)

Post by tdockery97 »

I have tried all the methods I could find with my friend Google, and the GoogleEarthLinux.bin file begins running but then fails. The errors I get are:

setup.data/setup.xml :1: parser error : document is empty
setup.data/setup.xml :1: parser error : start tag expected, '<' not found

Any help will be appreciated.

Install the googleearth-package

In terminal cd to the map you have googleearth
Run as normal user: make-googleearth-package --force
Ignore the warings.

After the deb is made install it with dpkg -i googleearth_5.2.1.1588+0.5.7-1_i386.deb

Succes

Well, it installed but as a broken package. The following is the crash report:

Major Version 5
Minor Version 2
Build Number 0001
Build Date Sep 1 2010
Build Time 11:25:42
OS Type 3
OS Major Version 2
OS Minor Version 6
OS Build Version 32
OS Patch Version 0
Crash Signal 11
Crash Time 1284023375

Stacktrace from glibc:
/usr/lib/googleearth/libgoogleearth_free.so(+0xd090b)[0xb775290b]

So, still no success.

I tried googleearth-package on KDE, Gnome, and Mint Debian. Never could get it to work. On KDE and Gnome I enabled Medibuntu and installed that version from synaptic. However............I have no idea if Medibuntu is compatible with Mint Debian since I have not tried it yet..

It's not compatible do not do it. It could work but don't do it in a long run you could have troubles.

I have installed it some time ago without a problem in Debian.
IDK if you guys can't install it but sometimes it doesn't run because of the video driver.

Video driver? I had no problem getting Google Earth work in Linux Mint 9.

This is the first time I have problem installing and running Google Earth - unfortunately with LMDE, my favorite OS! Can someone who is techie enough to figure out the problem? I think this is the real challenge for LMDE to install and run Google Earth.

I tried again and Google Earth ran but crashed almost immediately. I have a similar crash report as tdockery97:
Major Version 5
Minor Version 2

Build Time 11:25:42
OS Type 3
OS Major Version 2
OS Minor Version 6
OS Build Version 32
OS Patch Version 0
Crash Signal 11
Crash Time 1286067242
Up Time 1.9542

Stacktrace from glibc:
/usr/lib/googleearth/libgoogleearth_free.so(+0xd090b)[0xb785a90b]
[0xb78b3400]
/usr/lib/googleearth/libIGGfx.so(_ZN3Gap3Gfx18igOglVisualContext4openEv+0xa7)[0xb4acf2b7]
/usr/lib/googleearth/libevll.so(_ZN5earth4evll13VisualContext11OpenContextEN3Gap3Gfx25igRenderDestinationFormatERKNS0_8InitInfoE+0xff)[0xb1d50d3f]
... THE REST IGNORED
Is this a video driver problem? How to get it fixed?

Save the error information you get and try to find out at GE's forum: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/e ... aign=earth

I already checked at GE's forums. This is a known bug in Google Earth that hasn't been taken care of by their developers.

If you're using Debian, it should be as simple as:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install googleearth-package
That package resides in the contrib section of the Debian repos, and it is enabled by default in your sources.list...as long as you haven't messed with it, you should be able to locate "googleearth-package" and install it.

Thanks vincent, but the issue is not so much with installing it as with running it. The installation itself went as you would expect. But when you try to run it, it crashes during splash screen. There are posts on many different forums complaining about the problem, including Google Earth forum.

No problems here.

$ apt-cache policy googleearth
googleearth:
Installed: 5.2.1.1588+0.5.7-1
Candidate: 5.2.1.1588+0.5.7-1
Version table:
*** 5.2.1.1588+0.5.7-1 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Download the newest version From Google, then run /usr/bin/make-googleearth-package in the same directory. You may have to use the force option. After that use dpkg or gdebi to install the .deb.

Keep in mind Google Earth needs decent 3d graphics.

Hey folks, you may want to check out the parallel thread on this for a possible weird fix:

Well, I remain forever hopeful, but this did not work, at least for me. First, as before, the install package on the repo does nothing. No change there....but I did download the latest Linux version from googleearth.com, and of course it did not install with:

sh GoogleEarthLinux.bin, neither as user, nor as root. So googled and tried this suggestion from googleearth help site:

As root:
./GoogleEarthLinux.bin --target /tmp/ge
cd /tmp/ge/setup.data/bin/Linux/x86/
mv setup.gtk setup.gtk2

Then as user:
cd /tmp/ge
./setup.sh

Complained about:
Error msg: Failed to load module "libcanberra-gtk-module.so": libcanberra-gtk-module.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So I installed the "libcanberra-gtk..dev" package via synaptic. and tried again. This time it installed, and installed a desktop icon. However, it crashed when I ran it.

So, I guess I have gotten a bit further than before, since it now will install, but still no joy.

This is not solved for me.

Regrets,
Bob

Edit...I did install the suggested package "libgl1-mesa-dr" prior to this experiment.
System: 32 bit intel cpu, 2 gig ram, radeon driver on x350 ati 9600.

So, you had already tried the primary Debian method?

i.e.

apt-get googleearth-package
make-googleearth-package --force
dpkg -i 'the_generated_debian_file_whatever_it_is'

It takes a long time, but that is how I did it.

darethehair,
Yeah, I have tried that a couple of times...both with Mint 9 izzy, and now with deb...No joy...Actually, I tried on a few different machines with both amd, and intel, and with Nvidia, and Radian. All went for naught. So, I think the problems is with Mint somewheres. I can and did install GE on Fedora linux, on the above machines. (I have bunches of hard drives that I use to test out various distro installs. That way if something borks, I can always swap a drive and distro.) I do recall reading on these forums that Debian has (always) problems with googleearth. Anyways, maybe next year lol.

Regards
Bob

Not that I have any extra skill or knowledge in this matter, but what happens when you try those various steps that I mentioned? Error messages? Maybe if you post the responses someone will be able to offer some suggestions (?).

I found this post that could provide a breakthrough:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 89#p326589

Basically user secipolla suggests that we run this command "inxi -G" to see the output. This is the output of that command for my computer:
Graphics: Card ATI RS480 [Radeon Xpress 200G Series] X.Org 1.7.7 Res: 1360x768@60.0hz
GLX Renderer N/A GLX Version N/A
secipolla said "If GLX version is not there, then no GLX and no Google Earth." This is the situation for me as my Google Earth crashes as soon as I start it.

So the question is, how to get GLX Renderer working?
