Re: Browser recommendation
I think that for some reason, javascript was disabled in my locally built midori so speed dial couldn't show up.
Now that I played a while with the installed package from frickelplatz.de, the locally built one has speed dial working.
BTW, one of midori's extensions does just that, quickly enabling/disabling images, javascript and plugins for a page.

spead dial is implemented in midori >= 0.2.6. Just click on the shiny yellow icon on the very left.ukbrian wrote:I just couldn't live without the Speed Dial add-on in Firefox

Re: Browser recommendation
ACK. What I really also like: it's developed by one talented programer and his partner. She likes Japanese cooking, and the name midori (japanese language=green) came up. I like the attitude. Maybe it's a bit pathetic, but here, in something like midori, the old spirit of open source is still alive.

Re: Browser recommendation
I loaded it but was unable to create multiple tabs/groups as I do with the Firefox add-on. I run with 21 tabs with 42 dials on each so that's 882 dials I have available. animation http://lin.me.uk/pics/anim-sd.gifspead dial is implemented in midori >= 0.2.6. I seemed to be restricted to one page of dials with Midori but I expect it's me not configuring it correctly.

Impressive. Say, is that a "speed dial" or does it take ages to find the right botton?ukbrian wrote:I loaded it but was unable to create multiple tabs/groups as I do with the Firefox add-on. You can't search your dials for text at the moment, you have got to remember where you put them but you can drag n drop from one group to another or drag bookmarks into a dial, you can launch apps or gadgets from a dial.
I helped the guy with the GUI a bit at the start and I've watched him add to it the last two years, he knows his onions when it comes to coding, he started with a good base he could expand from without hitting brick walls.
It's become an essential for me, I'm just amazed the Mozilla devs have not picked up on it and built something similar into Firefox.
It really is worth looking at, there's a video of the basics at http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=56180
His next big upgrade is to sync your diald in the cloud like xmarks, I think he's using Weave to do it.
At the moment I use FEBE to backup my profile into a Dropbox folder which works OK on multiple machines.

Re: Browser recommendation
Hello, ukbrian.
Midori is a nice alternative browser with nice features but of course it can't compare with Firefox when it comes to add-ons (I think no browser can).
Regarding the spped dial add-on not being incorporated in FF I think that's the way things should be, as long as the add-on works well then keep it as an add-on. That's what makes FF such a powerful and customizable browser.

Re: Browser recommendation
I agree with you, there is no one browser that is perfect for all it depends on the users needs, in my case I'm a mouse man and I want to be able to see and click on links, others spend most of their time on a keyboard and access links that way.secipolla wrote:Hello, ukbrian.

Firefox generally integrates the worthwhile (lacking the word to describe them) add-ons, a case in point is an add-on I have used for many years,Compact Menu 2, that is incorporated into the next version and I'm very pleased to see them using the top line of the window at last as Songbird shows and the Maxthon Asian clone of IE has been doing for quite sometime.Regarding the speed dial add-on not being incorporated in FF I think that's the way things should be, as long as the add-on works well then keep it as an add-on. But I prefer putting file, edit, controls etc as a drop down from an icon or in my case I just use the text "Menu" and that means soon I will be able to put my nav bar on the top line with no waste of real estate by the windows title bar.
This is just a mockup of what I want that I want in Paint Shop Pro 5

Re: Browser recommendation
Having played with Midori a bit (albeit very briefly), I'll stick with Chromium as my mainstay. In a browser, the most important features for me are speed, rss links, speed, tabbed browsing, and speed. (Did I mention speed?) Anything that doesn't render well in Chromium usually does so in Firefox. And if I am downloading something large, I'll jump over to Firefox just to be able to use DownThemAll as a download manager as I live in a part of the world where internet is not very consistent and I can lose it at anytime. DTA allows me to pick it back up where it left off.

Re: Browser recommendation
I just installed Midori 0.2.7. It does seem to render the fonts nicer. But it seems to use too much CPU, especially when it's rendering a new page, not very responsive.

0.2.8 is another step forward. It's in the frickelplatz-repo.leonbnu wrote:I just installed Midori 0.2.7. It does seem to render the fonts nicer. But it seems to use too much CPU, especially when it's rendering a new page, not very responsive.

Strange. I mean Midori (like any other browser) is not worth to brake a system of course. Maybe something went wrong during your installation. What you could try, and it's save: Open synaptic -> midori -> complete remove (purge...). After doing that, install midori again.SteveHoffmanUK wrote:anamnesis wrote:
