No internet after formatting partition

Post by randy_amendolara »

Hi,
got a big problem here..
I've decided to install windows(xp) because i'm not that good with using wine and vbox.. it was just to much work everytime i tried to install something..
I've installed xp next to mint, but then of course the grub was gone.. So i made the stupid mistake to format the (windows) partition again and install ubuntu on it.. this way i had a grub again and could load mint.(i know i could've just installed grub trough live cd but i was just not that smart ;) )
Now the problem was i did'nt have any wireless networking anymore.. not on mint nor on ubuntu.
I decided to ignore the problem for now because i still had wired networking, and i tried to reinstall xp. Did not work, it kept saying that the partition was not the correct format for xp (again and again i tried to reformat into all kinds of things, yes also ntfs did not work)
anyhow i decided to leave it for now, reinstall ubuntu on the partition i wanted to install xp(just to get the grub)
Now when i started mint, i did not have wireless connection, but i also did not have wired connection! :s
fortunatly on ubuntu the wired connection does work(wireless does not)
Anyone who might be able to fix this?? i need wireless for school so it's important..

Please post the make and model of your wireless card. To do this, type the following in a terminal, and post back the output.

Code: Select all

Didn't forget, just don't know of any easy answer to the question.

A google search provided some results with 2 ways reported to work on the ubuntu forums, though I do not guarantee success

and here -> http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/05/ubuntu ... d-wpa.html

Wow, this does not seem easy.. first of all i never used Gedit, i don't know how to locate those files either (.os/linux/... => can't find this map).
Otherwise let's just start with step 1: because it does not work in mint nor in ubuntu, i'm affraid it might be a hardware problem, because the drivers can't be erased in both os right? i've had my share of bad luck but that would just be riddiculous..?
So how can i check if my hardware is ok?(command in terminal?)
If the hardware is fine i can try this method.. if i ever succeed in figuring out how :p

Now I am confused, I thought you had windows Xp, and probably installed Mint? under mint4win (Ubuntu wubi mode), that is not a real Linux installation
--that is, it is not linux in its own partition, so it would run slower than normal
  • Since you know the windows OS ?, perhaps you can fix the networking problem in windows and then check on Linux after that is working
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 11#p324011
--and I thought you had already solved all your windows OS (XP versions) and Ubuntu problems..

Full help with cli (terminal) commands available; just takes reading and looking, same was windows OS

No, look:
I had Ubuntu first as my main and only OS, then i've installed Mint, making that my main OS, but keeping ubuntu as kind of a backup in case mint crashes..
Virtualbox was to difficult for me(mainly it worked but everytime i tried to install something it was a disaster), so i've installed Windows XP (lite version) besides the allready existing mint and ubuntu.(so now i had 3 OS)
When i installed xp it erased my grub, so i could not boot mint or ubuntu, also in xp i did not have internet working.
So now i had xp as the only os that would boot, without internet connection, so i could not contact the forum to help me. Thats why i've decided to delete xp, using the ubuntu installation disc.
Still following?.. :p
Finally when i did this, the grub was back, and i could boot my precious mint again, when i did this i noticed that the wireless connection did not work in mint, nor ubuntu.

So now i have 3 partitions=>
1 using Ubuntu(the oldest i had),
1 using Mint,
and 1 using the new Ubuntu(installed when i deleted xp to get grub back, when i manage to get mint grub back i will delete this one, but thats not important right now)

None of these have wireless internet connection working=>
i can't reinstall xp, it gives me a partition error(and yes i've tried to format in all kinds of stuff(ntfs,etc..) nothing worked) => however this is not my main concern now, main concern is getting wireless back in mint/ubuntu/ubuntu.

Post by randy_amendolara »

Hi, guys, done a lot of research and still nothing...
Done a lot of tests and everything seems to be okay(as far as i can tell) except this:

randy@randy-laptop ~ $ sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 No scan results

=> the no scan results is not good, but i can't find the sollution to this problem :s
please help me this is really pissing me off :p i'm really considering of buying a new laptop because of this(and this one is just 1year old so it's a waiste of money) :s
