Re: Mint9 super slow, help!

Every once in a while I boot into Mint-9 on my test partition and run all updates in hopes that this problem will have been fixed. Well it seems it finally has.

Booted into Mint-9, launched Synaptic and ran all updates and after a reboot all seems well. No more hangs or pauses. Got Compiz Fusion running with lots of effect. Videos play great, etc. So it appears my ATI Radeon X1950 Pro AGP is now working as it should. Not sure what the specific fix was (I'm guessing a kernel update) but I'm glad it's working.

Code: Select all

tim@Linux-Mint9 ~/Desktop $ inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card ATI RV570 [Radeon X1950 Pro] X.Org 1.7.6 Res: 1920x1080@60.0hz
GLX Renderer Mesa DRI R300 (RV560 7280) 20090101 AGP 4x x86/MMX/SSE2 TCL GLX Version 1.5 Mesa 7.7.1 Direct Rendering Yes
BTW, anyone know why they did away with the mark all upgrades button in Synaptic? Kind of annoyed that I had to create a custom filter to do what used to be a simple mouse click. What's the point of making something harder?

Scratch that. It's not fixed. :(

Tried a fresh install, and after applying all updates it's still broken. :x

So... back to square one. Anyone got any more insight on this issue?

Okay, I noticed on the install that does work (my test partition) inxi -Gx returns:

me@Test-Mint9 ~/Desktop $ inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card ATI RV570 [Radeon X1950 Pro] X.Org 1.7.6 Res: 1920x1080@60.0hz
GLX Renderer Mesa DRI R300 (RV560 7280) 20090101 AGP 8x x86/MMX/SSE2 TCL GLX Version 1.5 Mesa 7.7.1 Direct Rendering Yes

While on the new install that does not work I get:

me@Shuttle-Mint9 ~/Desktop $ inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card ATI RV570 [Radeon X1950 Pro] X.Org 1.7.6 Res: 1920x1080@60.0hz
GLX Renderer Mesa DRI R300 (RV560 7280) 20090101 x86/MMX/SSE2 TCL DRI2 GLX Version 1.5 Mesa 7.7.1 Direct Rendering Yes

Notice something missing? Yea, no AGP 8x. :( So how do I get AGP working? Both installs have the same driver and xorg.conf file, so I don't understand why the new install is still running without AGP support.

Hope this helps, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=493067, don't have AGP myself so can't suggest anything more.

Okay, I just tried Mint-10 RC, and although it shows the same results from inxi -Gx (no AGP) it actually seems to be working fine. Runs fast with full desktop effects/compiz enabled.

Bummer the LTS version is broken. I really wanted to go with LTS as my main OS.

I wonder what's up with that? My ATI card worked fine in versions 5-6-7 & 8, but it's broken in Mint-9, and working again in Mint-10. Odd. Oh well... guess I'll do some more testing of 10 and if all goes well I'll just skip 9. Or maybe it's time to give the Debian Edition a try?

xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd

is not installed. According to the description of this package it is the driver for the Radeon X1950 Pro (and others). I tried installing it manually, but nothing changed. There doesn't seem to be an xorg.conf file any longer, so how do I force Mint to use this driver?
