resolutions only 800x600

I updated my 3DFX drivers thru synaptic for my voodoo 5500 card but I still can't get a higher resolution than 800x600 Any ideas would really be great.

You might want to try this:

Especially use these values:

HorizSync 31.50-81.00
VertRefresh 40.00-75.00

!The rest will be different!
!!Generate your own xorg.conf!!

I opened terminal and copied and pasted "sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf" into it and pressed enter.
Then,copied and pasted all the script from Section "ServerLayout" to Modes "1024x768" "800x600"

And even rebooted but nothing has changed! Any other ideas...?

(Why can't this just be implemented into the OS...?)

Reinstall is a nonsense in this case.

Why? Because you use an old hardware, for which manufacturer hasn't made any proper driver.
Googling "voodoo 5 ubuntu" gives you the answer. Learn how to search first, then complain.

No kidding! 3dfx went out of business years ago. Their patents and papers were bought out by nVidia.
time to get something more current. I just saw some nVidia 8400GS video cards over at Newegg.com for as little as $24. They are decent.
