It seems that the ratio on the graph is true for Linux to UNIX user ratio for non-Windows and Mac OS users too. What's the most popular UNIX distribution, and why are so few people using UNIX?
Why is Linux more popular than UNIX?

Re: Why is Linux more popular than UNIX?
Apart from Linux and *BSD, most UNIX implementations are proprietary and very expensive. That's pretty much it.
Re: Why is Linux more popular than UNIX?
Hi,
It is popular in 'super computer' a.k.a research fields as it is open-source (can be modified to your liking).
As for other fields, you can see a different landscape
Enterprise servers: UNIX
Desktop: Windows
Mobile: Android / iOS
Embedded: Linux
Regards

Re: Why is Linux more popular than UNIX?
The most popular would likely be PC-BSD according to http://distrowatch.com/ with OpenBSD lagging behind.
Unix was always an expensive OS used mainly on supercomputers (schools, government, etc). The Unix (BSD) community tends to be smaller than the Linux communities and usually lags behind in features as a result. I have used PC-BSD and OpenBSD and both worked just fine, but I find Linux easier and the Linux communities (especially Mint!!!) much more friendly and helpful.
