Run one main distro and then try all the rest as virtual machines in Virtualbox, thats how I do it.

I too dislike their brownish/orange defaults. But it only takes a few mouse clicks to 'correct' that problem :D

Heh, mine was

Mandriva One> Ubuntu> Linux Mint> Freespire> Linux Mint> Linux Mint (those are reinstalls)> Linux Mint> Ubuntu> Linux Mint> Kubuntu> Linux Mint

Or at least something like that. I've tried many distributions on LiveCD not installing them though.

i also like to try different distros but i also like to have that one setup which works... so i have my main installation occupying most of my hard disk... but i have a 5GB test partition that I use to play around... and whenever i find one that is worthy of my main installation, it dethrones the current ruler... however, this is a rare occurence...

my main installations since i started using Linux in 2004...

RedHat 9 > Windows XP (I was undergoing withdrawal symptoms...) > Mandrake 10.0 > Mandriva 2005 LE > Mandriva 2006 Free > Ubuntu Dapper > Ubuntu Edgy (upgraded not reinstalled) > Ubuntu Feisty (upgraded) > Linux Mint Cassandra XFCE Community Edition.

Other distros I have tried... SuSE 9, SuSE 10, Debian, Slackware, Lindows (anybody remember this one?), MEPIS, Fedora Core 5, Fedora Core 6, Gentoo Stage 1 (didnt get very far with this one), Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Linux Mint Bianca, Linux Mint Bianca KDE, Vector Linux (dont remember what version... 5 maybe?), Slax, DSL, Puppy Linux, KNOPPIX,

For my home server I used Mandriva 2006 Free > Ubuntu Feisty Server.

thats it... hope i havent forgotten any... :)

Has anyone checked out Shift Linux yet?
I heard about it, even downloaded RC2 and ran on VirtualBox, but then it crashed. Along with my whole system. :(

distro hopping

Post by dracorX »

in no particular order, only counting the ones I tested within the last three years (using linux since quite a longer time)

*Freespire 1.0 + 2.0 (nicely polished, but always problems with my graphic card)
*Fedora diff. versions (took me some time to configure and polish it, but ran fine then)
*Knoppix Live CD ('nuff said)
*Kubuntu (well - not bad, lacks polishing)
*Opensuse
*Old Suse
*PC Linux OS (repository and app install too slow)
*Linux Mint (favourite so far)
*Debian
*Some BSD's

Well
I think I will stay with Linux Mint KDE for a while. making a customised live dvd for me probably.
