Install KDE 4.5, remove Gnome?

Post by madgenius »

Hi All,

Just moved from openSuSE 11.3 to LMDE. It's very user-friendly, and am liking it so far.

As a KDE fanboy though, I'm finding some of the things Gnome does a bit irritating. Is there any way I can install KDE 4.5, and safely get rid of everthing Gnome?

I know that a

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install kde-full
will install KDE for me, but the version in the repository seems to be KDE 4.4, and not the latest KDE 4.5

Thanks in advance.

I dont know of anyway besides blowing the partition and installing a fresh install. Blowing the partition will get rid of anything Gnome.

Try

sudo apt-get install kde-desktop
but as a first I'd slap the keyword
kde

in your gnome package manager Synaptic to let it find the proper stuff.

BTW many apps work in gnome, like k3b and many others :D

Thanks Elisa, will give that a try.

Know that KDE apps will work in Gnome with the kdelibs installed - it's the Gnome DE I object to :D

Hi!
As I wrote in
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=59461
I now have Gnome and KDE 4.5.1
My way: I
1) made partitions "/" and "/home" with geparted-live
2) installed Mint 10 from live-CD
3) installed "kde-full" with Gnome / System / Software Manager
(be patient, it will take some time)
4) Applications / Administration /Login Screen: Unlock ->
+ Show the screen for choosing who will log in
+ Select: "User Defined Session" as default session
5) reboot
6) lower panel: choose session KDE or Gnome , ...

Go to this website - http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/purekde - and follow the directions given.
Yes I know it refers to Ubuntu, but it should get you where you want to be with a pure KDE system.

open synaptic, remove gnome, gnome-core and gnome-desktop-enviroment ; after that you should see a lot of packages in the auto removable section , check all of them , and remove them(you should check do you want to remove all of the autoremovable packages) , or; apt-get remove gnome gnome-core gnome-desktop-enviroment ; apt-get autoremove
this should remove most of gnome

you can also try apt-get autoremove --purge gnome* , and if you just want to see what actions would be performed apt-get -s autoremove --purge gnome*

If you want a pure KDE edition, I would recommend aptosid instead of LMDE.
