Wifi connection

[Clyde]

Installed Mint Fluxbox 9 on a computer I had with Mint Gnome before. With regular Mint the wifi was just there and was no issue to get it configured and running. However, with Fluxbox Mint, wireless connections are unhighlighted. I tried setting up my ssid and password and it just won't connect. The driver was a realtek ...tried loading from disk I have and can't get it to install :/

Can you try the following to see if it solves the problem you may have in Kernel modules: 8139too, 8139cp It appears you have both drivers loading in your /etc/modules, even though the driver in use is the 8139too.

it wasn't working either in cd live mode ... but i went ahead and did a full intall anyway. CD live in Gnome does work tho

I think what happened is instead of blacklisting 8139cp you accidentally blacklisted the module we need to run, which is 8139too. Can you change /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf the last line to 8139cp and then restart and see what happens?

yes itis 8139too... ok changed from 8139too to 8139cp - rebooted and still behaves same way ... can always see that spinning wheel @ the bottom like it's trying to connect ... then i get a message "disconnected you are now offline"

Just in case something is going on with the usb wifi, i reloaded 'gnome isadora live' and the wifi connects and is working with it.

Oh man, I just now realized this is your ETHERNET card, not your wireless card. I was racking my brain trying to figure out why it would not work but your wired internet works fine....just like it should. All these steps were doing was attempting to use one driver instead of the other for the same device...just the wrong one.

TBABill, the issue is with wifi usb - not ethernet connection. I have another computer with the router ... just trying to connect to it with the fluxbox isadora - as stated before, when loading Gnome Isadora, the usb wifi is working fine on this same machine.

Ok the wirless is Ralink and appears to need the RT2870STA driver. Should be built into the kernel but it needs to be active. Can you

and then try the wirless. You may need to give it a minute. After that if it's not working, please just

I have seen where others got the same chipset going with

sudo modprobe rt2800usb

but others claim to have had to blacklist this same one and use the rt2870sta. Will have to do a bit of trial and error to be sure which.

then we can see if you have conflicting drivers (like the rt2800usb and the 2870 both trying to claim the device).

If you look at your last post you can see where the response lists both the rt2800usb and the rt2870. I would suggest first trying to blacklist the rt2870 by doing

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

and add the following to the end of the file

rt2870

and then

sudo gedit /etc/modules

and add

rt2800usb

to the end.

If this does NOT work, just reverse it all and replace the blacklist item with rt2800usb and the modules item with rt2870 and rt2870sta.

And after you blacklist one of them, just sudo modprobe theotherone to initiate it.

Edit: I still do not understand why just changing DE versions of the distro has an impact on wireless. Have you fully updated the Fluxbox version yet? Something simple could be causing this beyond the driver that I'm not aware of and possibly fixed in an update.
