This is a new one. Its always better to do a fresh install instead of upgrading in place. Just make sure you back up you data first. You don't want to lose you Favorite Family Photos or you Favorite songs in upgrading :D

You dont have to reinstall if you dont want too. It is a rolling Distro. If you are running LMDE now its fine. Like everyone else I have been waiting for the Freshly updated version to hit the site. If you have yours installed and updated you should be fine just like you are.

theres some kind of confusion here.
if you installed LMDE 201009 and did regularly

Code: Select all

apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
you are now with the LMDE 201012 running in your machine.

These new isos are only worthy for the ones waiting for a 64 bit version and for the new-comers.

With rolling releases, as LMDE is, we dont need to reinstall to be up-to-date with the "new releases",

so you only need to install if you want to try the new 64 bit version

if you always used aptitude, keep on using it and dont need to change to apt.

heres the equivalent syntax

Code: Select all

aptitude update
aptitude upgrade
aptitude dist-upgrade

I may have to stick with the upgrade method--the new 32bit install crashes on my system! Right after the gdm3 fires off, the screen goes blank, and the keyboard becomes unresponsive! I've started a thread...

Excellent. Thanks to clem and all.

The 64 bit is great but it's also good to have the updated 32 bit for new installs on friends' boxen. (I also hope it will resolve a wireless problem on a Thinkpad we have.)

I've Been waiting on 64 bit distro and changing the grub install (to partition) made it a breeze for us multi- boot geeks. (Win7,xp and now best of all, Mint Debian).
Thanks Clem and all the dedicated people involved. Outstanding work! Merry Christmas to you all!
