Last week i installed Puppy in a Compaq Armada 100s which has 64MiB ram (56 usable) and it worked perfectly and loaded fast. Of course Dillo runs faster than Firefox
I used puppy-2.17.1-nolzma-seamonkey-fulldrivers.iso to burn a CD; booted, used gparted to make a swap and reiserfs (or ext3) for the system and then did the hard disk install (be patient and leave the machine alone for a couple of hours).

Artemis3,
As it stands Debian Etch works the best in regard to the installer, apps, and just about everything else.
This machine is ancient -- PII best "Designed for Windows NT / Windows 95. It is not fast, but faster than many, many M$ XP machines that I've used even today. Plus more secure.
What I wanted to actually install was Damn Small Linux, but never could get it done because the version was never recognized.
Another attempt that I tried was the many "Business Card" versions out the e.g 50-60Mb ISOs. That would have been the way to go.
Guys, thanks for all the posts.

Oh Yessx66gns wrote: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Insta ... orySystems
I installed a commmand line system , Added X .... added only the dependencies & programs I needed ..... If I'm not mistaken this is essentially what the old schoolers had to do back in the day
A couple of small Distros to try
I used to have an old IBM Thinkpad 390E from about 1999 or so. At first, I maxed out the memory to 256 mb and added a bigger harddrive (4.3 gb to 40 gb) and used the old 4.3 gb drive in an enclosure as additional storage. BTW, The old drive was 4200 rpm and the 40 gb drive is 5400 rpm drive. That makes a difference.
Anyhow, I had Xubuntu v6.06 running on it. Also, Berry Linux, Goblinx, PCLinuxOS v0.93 "Mini Me" and "Junior," and Sante Fe Linux. I heard about Fluxbuntu after I got rid of it or I would've tried it too. They all ran on the Thinkpad. Some were slower than others and I blame that on lack of memory and the slow harddrive. That was my first laptop.
I, eventually, put Windows 2000 pro in it and gave it to my daughter for school. I just could not get wireless working on it and bought myself a new laptop. She still has the Thinkpad.
Just some more suggestions for you to try.
Good Luck.

Mdmint,
Thanks for that. In the end I had to go to Etnernet with Debian because I could not get WiFI going.
You have raised an interesting point -- buying "what is thought to be old equipment. The other day I was in a small PC store, and saw some well-kept stuff that might make a useful back-up / test set-up.
I've the idea "Why By New" has now become appealing, let alone up-dating to every new Distribution out there. Hmm...
How did you do 'Net connect?
