Gnome / Openbox Hybrid?

Postby vrkalak on Thu Dec 30, 2010 3:40 pm

Is it possible (without too much difficulty) to have an Openbox/Gnome desktop?

Since Gnome is a full desktop environment and Openbox is only a Window Manager.
Use the Gnome DE and have Openbox WM, instead of Metacity or Compiz? (with Ob Config & Menu included)

I know it won't be near as light as a straight Openbox, but it would add Ob convenience to Gnome DE.
What do you think? Work-arounds?

On a separate /root partition I have LinuxMintDebianEdition (Gnome) x64 ... can I 'add' Openbox? Not replacing anything except the WM?

Sure, you can use gnome with openbox as windowmanager. If you install openbox that option should actually show up as an alternative in 'choose session' at login. Might be called openbox-session-gnome or something similar.

I have been using 2 versions of LMDE thus far.

First, with the default Gnome set-up and the second LMDE OS is with the Xfce-4.8 desktop installed over Gnome.

Today, I added/installed the Openbox Window Manager over the existing Gnome desktop.
Now, it uses the same Gnome set-up but now uses Openbox as the WM instead of Metacity. (Which I had been using)

The only real change, I've noticed is that, I change themes and WM stuff via the Openbox Configuration Manager and the 'Window Tweaks' App is not there.

Is it possible to get and use the Openbox 'right-click' Full Menu while in Gnome? What if I remove Nautilus?
