[SOLVED]set up

Postby Sleven on Fri Dec 31, 2010 9:08 pm

I have a question about setting up a home network. I've only been using Linux for about five months and Mint the last three, so bare with me if you will.

I have two computers, both running Mint OSes. One has LM 10, the other has LM10, LMDE32, and LMDE64. LMDE64 is what I'm presently using most of the time on my machine, my first question is using the two different OSes can a network be set up?

My second question, both machines have ethernet cards that are connected to a Brighthouse router (a Motorola SURFboard) for our internet. Can this router be used to set up a home network?

Can

If yours Motorola is one of these , it is cable modem, then answer is NO, modem cannot route.
Then you need a router behind the Motorola Modem.

The SURFboard is not on the list in the link you gave me. I found the specs for the SBG6580 at Motorola

http://www.motorola.com/Video-Solutions ... ys/SBG6580

and in the specs it say-
Extensible networking, allowing customer to network up to 253 desktop computers, laptops and other Ethernet or wireless devices to create a full Class C network

but in reading the specs I don't know enough about networking to be able to tell if it can be used as a modem and a router at the same time. I'm posting the specs in hopes someone will be able to tell me if what I want to do is possible.

The SBG6580 is the ideal competitive solution for the high-end residential user, the small home office owner and medium to large businesses.

From reading the specs, looking its photos from this link
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6825122014

Yes, this new model has Cable Modem + gigabit Ethernet (4-port) + wireless

Very good from looking at its specs

As the computers are set up right now, each have an ethernet card with cat 5 cables connect to the SBG 6580. Will I need any addition hardware to set up the network?

No need any additional hardware.

Ethernet cable is all you need, cat5e is prefered, one end to computer network interface card, the other end to Motorola's one of the four LAN port.

What is your cat5 cable length? If your cat5 cable is short, like less than 15m then no worry it can sustain gigabits speed. However if you cable is long , then you should change to cat5e or cat6 to achieve gigabit speed.

Great, both cat5 cables are 6 feet.

Okay, I have already taken the steps outlined in these two articles on the LMDE64 system for file sharing.

viewtopic.php?f=42&t=23169
viewtopic.php?f=42&t=23169&p=315218#p315218

in preparation of setting up the network, I used the Nautilus approach.

Whats next? If there is an article with step by step instruction, I can try that and if I have any problems I'll post them here.

Thank you so much for the help you have already provided
