I use a couple of external hard-drives, myself.

One is the same as yours, a Western Digital - My Book Essential (2 Tb)

First, open a terminal and type: lsusb (with a lowercase L)
This will show if the computer 'sees' the USB

You might, also, look in the Nautilus File Manager and see if the USB storage drive/device shows up there.
(look for an 'icon' in the list on the left-hand side)

If it does you can click on the USB icon from within the File Manager to 'open' it ...
the USB-drive will probably show in the File Manager, as it is basically a large File Manager itself.

Hello, Thank your reply, i try to do it on your way. ..however..
i could see the usb by searching through terminal with typed lsusb. it displayed:
Bus 001 Device 014: ID 1058:1110 Western Digital Technologies, Inc.

but i can't find any icon about usb storage drive or device show up in file manager....
so i still can't open my external hard drive.....

I know this is an old thread but if anyone has a problem with wd my book you need to remove WD SmartWare. This is how to do it(you need windows or mac):
WD has posted the steps to remove the Smartware and its VCD, Mac or Windows...

http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/? ... eutilities

STEP 1: Firmware Update: Release 2.003 (3/4/10)

Before running the Virtual CD Manager, you must first update the firmware on your hard drive.

1.Disconnect all other external drives from the computer except for the My Book or My Passport drive you want to update.

2.Ensure that the My Book or My Passport drive is connected to a USB port on your computer.

3.Download the Firmware Updater for Windows.

4.Unzip the file and double click to open the Firmware Updater.

5.Click Continue to update the firmware.

6.Click Accept the End User's License Agreement (EULA). The updater will scan the drive which may take a few minutes.

7.Verify the attached drive's serial number located on the back of the drive.

8.Click Update Firmware.

9.Once the updater is finished, click Exit.

10.Turn off the drive - For My Passport, disconnect the USB cable. For My Book disconnect both USB and power cables.

11.Wait 10 seconds. Reconnect the USB/power cables.

STEP 2: Download and run the VCD Manager

1.Download VCD Manager for Windows.(WDSmartWareVirtualCDManagerforWindows-v1.0.7.4.zip) to your desktop.

2.Unzip the utility (Extract the file using an extraction utility.)

3.Double click WDSmartWareVirtualCDManagerforWindows-v1.0.7.4.exe.

4.Click Continue to disable the VCD.

5.Once the utility has found your drive, click Configure Drive and then click Exit.

6.Turn off the drive - For My Passport, disconnect the USB cable. For My Book disconnect both USB and power cables.

7.Wait 10 seconds. Reconnect the USB/power cables that have been disconnected in the previous step.

8.Verify that the VCD no longer appears.

You know, this could be something very simple. I have a friend who is relatively new to Linux. He just bought a 2 TB WD my book and attempted to install it to his Mint 10 laptop. He had the same problem as the OP. He called me over to look at the situation and try to help.

Turns out he had plugged the WD drive into a USB hub that he had plugged into his computer. He had a spare USB port on the computer so I moved the drive to that and it worked fine. Some peripherals just do not like connecting through an external USB hub. If that is how this drive is connected, try a direct connection to the computer.

My GF Samsung TV even says not to use a USB cable when connecting a USB pen because the USB ports are not full power or something like that.
