Vista has "funny" problems

Post by Husse »

A) It's so buggy that it is close to impossible to use - the problems we may have seem like a faint breeze compared to Vista's gale force :) Can't remember all he told me the other day.
B) As many of you may know, some localized versions of Windows (from W95 onwards) use a folder called "Program" instead of "Program files" and this has been the source of nuisance all the time. Some programs put (some of) their files "hard coded" in Program when the encounter such a localized version.
In VIsta Program is just an alias for Program files so the folder does not exist, even if you see it there :)
Lot's of funny errors from this with lots of questions in hardware and gamers forums :)
That's what you pay for :)

OMFG, I can absolutely confirm this! :shock: ... Tonight I had the doubtful pleasure of installing a HP 4180 all-in-one printer on a brand-new "fresh out of the box" HP Pavilion "a6110.ch" PC (AMD Athlonâ„¢ 64 X2 Prozessor 4000+, 320 GB, 1 GB RAM) ... It had "Vista Home Premium" preinstalled. OMFG ... that OS is sooooo sloooooooooooooow :shock:

I copied a few files from and to the USB stick ... copying 21 MB took like a ridiculous 15 minutes!?

Update from Norton? => Reboot.
25 Updates from Microsoft? => Reboot.
New USB-WebCam installed? => Reboot.
New HP printer => Reboot.

And everytime I need to transfer megabytes and megabytes of data to this OS which feels like an old 486 running at 33 MHz ...

Ubuntu and Mint on the very same hardware run at lightning speed!

Vista is such a baaaaaaad joke. The neighbour lady I installed this stuff for already asked me to remove this junk and put back "that other OS" I had given her on her broken previous PC as interim solution: Linux.

Fine. That's one less Vista user. :lol:

You know, my first machine was a Mac SE that my parents bought in 1986. Tiny little screen, dual floppy drives, and a whopping 20 MB of storage. That thing lasted me until 1999 (as a word processor), and the only reason why I got rid of it was because any .doc files I put on a floppy had to be translated before any modern comps were able to read them. I have to say, while I'm not a great fan of Macs, my SE's boot time was *still* a fraction of what I've experienced with Windows 2000 and higher - even after 13 years of service.

The moral of the story is, Windows = crap.

That's what my son thinks too - but like me he's a computer geek so he plays around with it - and ther are a few things in the courses he takes that needs the latest office :( (is it called 2007?)

Here is another 'opinion' about Vista.
See at http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2190228,00.asp
"Vista has turned into the desktop operating system no one wants"
"Today, I think of Vista as the zombie operating system. It stumbles around, and from a distance you might think it's alive, but close up it's the walking dead."
"Vista is the walking dead of the operating-system world."
K.I.S.S. ===> "Keep It Simple, Stupid"
"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." (Leonardo da Vinci)
"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler." (Albert Einstein)

windows slowly improved up till it peaked at 2K since then its just got worse again, its like climbing a mountain then falling off the other side, to continue the analogy vista is about 5m from the valley floor. :)

Vista is a "funny" Problem

Post by dracorX »

Hehe, sorry, changed the title to match reality.

Now, let's get serious again.
My gf bought a laptop with vista on it. She is a regular user, using it only for mail, internet, word processing and some (lowend) gaming. Here's my experiences with it...

... It becomes slower every hour of uptime
... It annoys me with lot of feedback question
... It has never died yet
... It "works" slow, but rather stable

So it IS bad (with linux mint, that would be a fast machine, with Vista it's dead slow), it IS annoying (do you really want to execute that program, reeally? reeeeally? It IS unstable (not that it hanged a lot, but it slows down with uptime)...

Well, it seems to me like a wonderfully designed TV case, containing a b/w tube ;-)

Have you change the performance from Balanced to High Performance.
Then you can edit the plan so when it's on batteries it's setup for max battery performance.

thanks for your advices

Thanks for the advices, but I will let it run as it is... it is her laptop. Now, she will find out herself and in less than a year, she will go down to her knees asking me to install mint ;-)

Nope, she wanted to stay with vista for the moment, so her problem really.

I know how things end up: when my MOTHER bought a laptop, she formatted it all for herself and installed XP knowing I would help if necessary - which it wasnt ;-)
