A lot has changed now since the document was updated. You can use AWN, Cairo Dock or any of the available docks to get the Mac look.

Thanks for the fast reply infra red dude. i managed to get the bar at the bottom using awn (i didn't know you had to install it seperatly) now for the menu at the top! is there something i need to install there?
thanks. im using linux mint i dont know how to check which kernal (im new to linux and not too good)

No, there is nothing special to install. The default should be just fine. You can arrange panel items in whatever way you wish.
