[solved] mint won't start - help with recovering data

Post by noobiept »

Hello, so I was using mint debian for two weeks and it was working just fine, until today. My pc was suddently shutdown (I think it as to do with this house electrical wiring), it has happened before but I would restart the pc and it would work. But now it doesn't start (not even in recovery mode).

Ok no problem, let me just backup my stuff and reinstall the thing. This is where the problem lies, it seems I don't have access to the disk - I tried running a live cd but I can't access the disk where the installation is, it says some error. I have a windows installation aswell in this pc, and that works well.

I took a picture of the error I get in the booting fase. I can show also what I get when trying to open through a live cd if needed.

(sorry about the bad quality, but I think its readable)

You can use another live cd meant for recovery.
One of them is partedmagic. Once boots up it runs in RAM and eject CD/DVD so you can recover and save files to CD or USB drive.
After you boot it up, click Mount Devices, hopefully you can still mount all the file system and recover your files

Doesn't work. It says: "Invalid mount option when attempting to mount the volume "245.4 GB Volume"

what now?

You could try this

Boot with partedmagic live cd, run gparted, see if Mint partition shows up, if yes click it, from top Menu, click Partition, from sub-menu, click Check, this should do a file system check and repair, hopefully it helps repair the Mint partition.

If still have problem, then have to use test disk, which is also inside partedmagic live cd, for this you need to read:
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

and follow the step by step method and attempt to repair partition:

Glad you got it fixed.

I just used Parted Magic to fix a grub problem so I agree: PARTED MAGIC IS GREAT!

This forum is great also.

yea, I was surprised on how easy it was, it just took a few seconds to fix the thing, reboot and its done. I was already thinking about the stuff I had lost (wasn't much since I backed up some weeks ago but still...), but was nice that I didn't even need to reinstall it :)
