Difference between dropbox and nautilus-dropbox packages

Postby rolandpish on Wed Jan 26, 2011 1:10 pm

Hi there.
In my LMDE I installed nautilus-dropbox (0.6.7-lmde) package and it works like a charm.
Surfing the LMDE mint repo I found also a package named dropbox (1.0.1). I would like to know what does this package install and what's the difference between nautilus-dropbox package.

Note: I don't want to install that "dropbox" package yet cause I'm synchronizing lots and lots of files and I don't know if installing that would mess up or do something weird with my dropbox folder.

Thanks in advance.

Had you installed:

It would have grabbed the Package you actually downloaded anyway. When you get ready, grab the other one as well.

Hope This Helps,
Dave

Are you using some special repos here?

My Dropbox version is 0.7.110 (with no updates available) and nautilus-dropbox is not even listed as an available package (not that I want it because I don't use Nautilus) but I just wonder why the differences.

EDIT. Just figured out where you are coming from. Those aren't Debian updates they are Mint Main updates.

I wasn't sure of the version (Dropbox), but I downloaded it out of the Software Manager. i am running LMDE with a Liquorix Kernel.

Possibly the OP is looking in the wrong forum. He could also be grabbing the .deb from the Dropbox Home Page.

Thanks,
Dave

Dropbox installs the main Dropbox functionality. Nautilus-dropbox adds integration with Nautilus, allowing you to right-click on a file and get Dropbox options in the popup dialog. Nautilus-dropbox is not required to run Dropbox, it just makes some things a little easier.

One thing the newer version does better is maintaining permissions. That does not work on the older version.

For example, if you grant execute rights to a script, it won't show up with execute right on another PC. That works correctly with version 1.x
