Hi!
Okay. I had to leave the house, now I'm back.
What is the primary step for you: to have access to Windows (at first: access) or should we try to repair/ install GRUB?

Hi seeley,
I'm not sure I understand your question. I'd like to get Mint and Windows working on this machine again. Whatever is the best way to do this is my primary step.

Hi!
We try to repair GRUB"2"; please read my help, III G, To repair Grub"2".
If you think you understand the steps, please boot from your live medium - I hope you can connect the NET from there - and post "ready".
Then we have to try, because you don't know which partition is root - we start with sda7.

Unfortunately, I can not connect from a live DVD at this time. The one ethernet cable we have is currently occupied and my wifi needs a driver

Ok, I tried the steps listed in your help for "repair grub2"

I made a directory /media/SDA7
it listed
grub-setup returned: grub-setup: error: cannot stat '/media/SDA7/boot/grub'.

Should I do the same for sda5?

Hi!
Yes.
There are 2 (or more) possibilities: sda7 is not your root partition, hardware issue (only one partition - it's possible), corrupt file,...

Hi!
Please try the "same" with To install Grub"2".
I did not test it, but you very often find that hint in other forums, so I'm sure it could work - if no hardware issue and so on....

Hi,
I have already done this. After I did it, GRUB v1.98 loaded when I turned the computer on without the live DVD. It gives me the prompt grub> _

Of course, when I tried it earlier I really didn't know for sure which partition was root, boot and home.

Is there something I can do from this grub> _ that would give us more info?

Hi!
Having "grub>_" you can type "ls" - you should see (hd0,.... ) [maybe several numbers) please post]
Then: type
"search -f /vmlinuz" [note the output - to post]
and:
"search -f /boot/grub/grub.cfg" ...post

Hi!
I must quit now!
I've added an alternative: To install Grub"2" NOT YET TESTED -> Alternative (see help, link1 below).
You should try it.
seeley

Edit for other users: (31/01)
I've corrected the part in my help and now there only is 1 advice - that worked - and no alternative.
