HOW TO: Emerald Install for 64 bit LMDE users

Post by joutlan »

install the key and repo, go into Synaptic and install Emerald. I comment out the repo after install:

Code: Select all

deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/shames/debian-sid/desktopfx/unstable/ ./
wget http://download.tuxfamily.org/shames/A42A6CF5.gpg -O- | apt-key add -
Ikey has a tutorial stickied for 32 bit users. Some good Emerald set up info may be obtained there.

To make it stick at every login: Go into Compiz Settings|Window Decoration and set the window manager to /usr/bin/emerald. Log out, log back in and you'll be greeted with a gorgeous default Emerald windowed desktop.

HTH :)

It's working great for me. I've requested that this be stickied to oscar799 for all the 64 bit LMDE users on the forums.

well, installation of emerald worked fine with leaving

away , but for updates i get error, that no public key is found.. any advice!?

ah, i maybou should say, that emerald just works for window boarders yet, but not for the inside windows stuff

hopefully thanks in advance,

It hapeens because you don't have permission to edit /etc/apt/trusted.gpg. You can run that command as root or you can manually download the key. Then add it by going to Control Center>Software Sources>Authentication, Import Key. Find the key you downloaded and then close. Updates should work after that.

well, i had the same idea and tried with sudo before.. same error, now in a root terminal it finally worked, thank you man, for the hint ^^

now i have "a problem with broken packages" when i try to update, but i think, this has nothing to do with the missing key!?
repair broken packages in synaptics is telling me succes, but the problem is still there.. any hint again?

cheers,

You have to comment out the source line in /etc/apt/sources.list . This is what mine looks like

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

# Emerald Theme, make sure this is commented out before running updates.
# deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/shames/de ... /unstable/ ./

The # sign comments it out.

Thanks for tracking this down. I loved Emerald on my 64-bit Main desktop. Over the weekend, I decided to try out LMDE. I was disappointed that I couldn't find The emerald engine anywhere except as source, and for some reason I could not get it to compile (not a programmer, just a few steps beyond noob  The Ubuntu repos had me spoiled with all of their tools). I hate to think that I'm so shallow that something like a themer engine could make me so aggravated and ready to chuck the whole experience, but I was about "this close."

*pat on the back* Thanks for restoring my faith.

Emerald no longer seems to be in the "frickelplatz" repo.
Does anyone have any info on this?

Thanks

I downloaded the older verison from the Tuxfamily repo
The wget "key" didn't work. I just ignored it.
Commented out the repo when done with it.

Code: Select all

CODE: SELECT ALL
deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/shames/debian-sid/desktopfx/unstable/ ./

wget http://download.tuxfamily.org/shames/A42A6CF5.gpg -O- | apt-key add -

its version 0.7.9xxx
(Frickleplatz had 0.8.4-1)

I have the Frickleplatz version installed on my SID partition.
I just installed the Tuxfamily 0.7.9xxx version on my Testing partition
and functionally so no difference.

I'd go ahead and use the older version.
If I find a newer version. I will post...

If you want:
libemeraldengine0_0.8.4-1_amd64.deb
emerald_0.8.4-1_amd64.deb

I still have them on my desktop. I'm pretty sure I downloaded them from Frickleplatz while I was following this thread.
