LMDE 64bit freezes now and then

Post by marlar »

Hi,

A few days ago my LMDE 64bit running on a Lenovo T500 laptop began to freeze now and then. It happens once a day or so. I am not quite sure, but perhaps it started after the major update when the new Debian was releases and update manager updated hundreds of packages.

For a period I thought it was related to my laptop running hot but it also happens long before it gets hot. Today, for example, it froze about 2 minutes after starting it.

There is not obvious cause of the system hangs. No specific program that seems to cause it, no patterns of any kind. And also no error messages or warnings - it just freezes up. I have also inspected syslog without finding anything strange at the time of the freeze.

I have noticed that the green harddisk icon on my laptop continues to indicate disk access, and at one time the system freeze happened during a skype call and interestingly enough I was able to continue the call even after the freeze, at least for a while.

I have used only level 1-3 upgrades.

Thanks in advance for any comments that can help my resolve this annoying problem.

Martin

You might have applied a Kernel update that might cause you this issue. I use the Liquorix kernel. If you are interested in trying it heres a link

Is it safe to upgrade the kernel? Can I reslore the old one if it goes wrong?

Argh, now it happened again. It's really annoying. I sure hope I don't have to reinstall as the whole purpose of installing LMDE was to avoid having to upgrade! And I have spent long time tweaking it.

However, I have more info. Both the harddisk lamp and WiFi lamp are blinking occasionally to signal activity. And I can ping the machine so it is not completely dead.

Does this give a hint?

Edit: I have now installed openssh on it so I can try to logon with SSH when it freezes again. Maybe it's only X that is freezing?

I've heard there were some issue's with X, but I'm not sure what they are personnally. I haven't had any issue's with my machine based on testing as of yet, and I generally allow all updates to come in.

Good Luck,
Dave
