Mint 10 - Easy install of Canon MP495 printer

Post by natchezjohn »

After a couple of attempts to get my printer working using the "hard" way.

I went to Canon site and downloaded cnijfilter-mp495series-3.40-1-deb to "Home", clicked on "install.sh", clicked "Run in terminal",
followed prompts and DAMN :D IT WORKS

Did same with scangearmp-mp495series-1.60-1-deb . Went to "terminal" typed scangearmp and NOW MY SCANNER WORKS :D :D

@natchezjohn

Thanks so much for this! - I'm almost there, BUT what do you mean by "Run in terminal" pretty please?
- If I double click on 'install.sh' I just get a screen full of code of course ...

I'm trying to get this Canon multifunctional working for my old man whilst he is in hospital
- I did warn him against buying Canon but he usually doesn't listen to me despite being converted to Lovely Linux with a Minty Freshness by yours truly ...
I was amazed to find Canon now seem to supply the drivers, but how to install them if one ain't a programmer?! ...

Dum de dum etc,
Chris. ;)

Right click on install.sh file and one of the choices is "Open in terminal" - Click it - and BINGO, just follow the prompts.

Thanks John!
- However when I try to open it, I am only offered options for 'gedit' or OpenOffice Word Processor
No choice for Terminal ...
I also tried directly copying the code into Terminal after I had opened it 'standalone', but copy & paste won't work of course ...
Frustrating or what?!

Suggestions and/or ideas gratefully received?!

DOH! SORRY - Double click on install.sh and you will see the "Run in terminal" choice.

John,
no apologies necessary mate! - I appreciate you trying to help ...
When I double click on install.sh, the code is automatically opened with gedit :? ...
Evidently my system is set up differently to yours :?: , although I thought I had all the default settings and updates with Mint 10 ...
Yours truly being an eternal optimist, I know I'll get there in the end, and I promise not to rant

According to another online forum, I need to change settings in Permissions for install.sh - But how and where?

Dum de dum etc,
Chris.

WELLLLLLLL - try Right Click, Properties (at the bottom)," Open With" tab, Select "Autorun Prompt".

That's how mine is set up. By default of course. I could NEVER have figured it out on my own.

I'm nearly-nearly there now
- Just stuck at the 'final hurdle' in Terminal ...

Re: the "in terminal" installation.

Methinks, you think too much. As I remember (with my very old, cluttered mind) I merely, for the most part, accepted the default entries and hoped for the best. It worked.

John,

you are correct of course! Printer now working - Yippee!

Scanner next ...
Downloaded zipped driver, extracted, ran install.sh in Terminal, but Simple Scan can't find the scanner?
- Any ideas of what you did pretty please?
(my father will be so chuffed to find all this working in Lovely Linux with a Minty Freshness when he gets out of hospital soon!!!)
I owe you an huge debt of gratitude for helping me with this :P
- Even making me realise it was possible, as I had previously though Canon were very hostile to Linux ...

Incidentally, I double clicked on install.sh and clicked again on the 'Run in Terminal' button which opened up Terminal and asked for system password ...
Seemed to run just fine, but how do I 'register' the scanner with the system?

scangearmp in Terminal does open a scanning menu of course, but it would be nice to have Simple Scan working too ...

Dum de dum etc,
Chris.

NO, simplescan won't work.

Just open a terminal and type - scangearmp and voila! you'll get scan window

Oh and open Control Center, select "Printing", make MP495 default.

That's it - I think, mayhaps, I hope, could be ...........

Indeed John :( ...
- It seems a shame, but there we go etc ...

Don't know if it is just me, but I was brought up working for 'Big Blue' in the '80's when Technical Authors were respected ...
Not so these dayz, eh?

Dum de dum etc,

I remember Univac! - I actually quite liked mainframe 'pooters - Kept me in a job in those days ...

Anyway, another online friend gave me this useful tip (Thanks Brian!) :~

While the scanner will not work with Xsane or Simple Scan you can add scangearmp to menu so you don't have to go to terminal and remember program name or open Gimp.

In 1965 the Univac mainframe was BIG (big room size) and had less power than a cell phone - sheesh!

BTW - "add scangearmp to menu" how do I do that? NEVER MIND :D Found It at http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=43824

Thanks a lot
