new install - cant update!

After briefly reverting back to windows on my desktop to do some video editing, I've managed to partition the disk for dual boot and have just installed lmde. However when I go to the update manager to try and update everything I keep getting this error message.

"Could not apply changes!
Fix broken packages first"

anyone know how to sort this out?

btw Ive checked the package manager and it says there are no broken packages.

I tried posting this that was posted on that forum:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

It seemed to do some stuff and in the end terminal threw up this:

apt (0.8.11) unstable; urgency=low

* apt-get install pkg/experimental will now not only switch the
candidate of package pkg to the version from the release experimental
but also of all dependencies of pkg if the current candidate can't
satisfy a versioned dependency.

when I try to exit out of terminal i get this message

There is still a process running in this terminal. Closing the terminal will kill it.

and when I check the update manager I still have the same problem :-/

Keep reading.

You may have to uninstall VLC to upgrade.

I removed vlc and it seems to be working. Strange tho, i wasnt prompted as happened on the other thread which is why i didn't do it

After you do updates today you will be able to reinstall VLC while running the most recent version of libva1.

The updates had several of the VLC support packages but not the VLC package itself.

I am also facing the same issue and got the same error message. I did a lot of things to sort this issue out but I still can't do upgrade. I did:
- I logged out and login to single user mode (init 3)
- apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
- aptitude safe-upgrade
- removed vlc and did sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade

Any help is greatly appreciated ..

Ps: Upgrade broke my system when I did the force upgrade, I reinstalled it
