I've seen the light...

Post by Dinoslawski »

Ahoy!

Just a few days a go I was nothing more than a simple Windows user. My last experience with Linux was something like 10 years a go and I can't say I liked it. Fast-forward to last week when my sister bought a new HP laptop. She asked me to look at it and set it up and so on, and me being kinda geeky I was of course more than happy to toy around with her brand new laptop. Surprise came early when on bootscreen it said "SUSE Linux" - I was intrigued to see what was new in world of Linux after so many years. What I saw blew my mind - I fell in love with it! I just HAD to get one on my PC so I went on to search for right distribution.
Ubuntu was prised as being most use-friendly so I went on to download that first.

60 minutes later I've managed to lose all my data on my hard-disk. Losing 10GB of photos was most painful. For a few days I tried to get em back but it was all in vain. Once I (and my girlfriend) made peace with it I was (morally) free to dig in to Linux and start enjoying it. Had a few problems making a dual-boot since I still needed Win7 for some school projects but on 4th attempt (once I actually RTFM  ) it was a smooth sail. Before last attempt I dropped Ubuntu and went for Linux Mint since I liked the look of it more and it promised to work "out of the box" and it DOES! It just works, happily running 64bit version.

PS: community already proved itself on IRC with all the help I needed to set up partitions for smooth install.

Go Mint :D

Sweet story for the most part...sorry to hear you lost your pictures. You definitely chose a great place to start back up with Linux and I'm sure the landscape has changed drastically since the last time you encountered it.

Welcome to Mint! It's a fun ride.

Have you tried photorec? It can bring back deleted stuff from your harddrive easily

Yup, I did. Problem is most (about 95%) of photos are in *.nef format which is Nikon's RAW format and photorec can't pick up only those files. Rescuing WHOLE disk is out of question since it was almost full... maybe if I had 2nd drive.
