[workarounded] latest upgrade kills my WiFi

Post by kwevej »

Hi there,

the latest dist-upgrade kills my wifi.
Thinkpad R400
wireless: Intel Wifi Link 5100 (AGN)

I have a system snapshot, so I can easily rollback ... In fact, this is my second attempt.
I'm trying to identify the problematic package.
This time, I set packages firmware-iwlwifi on hold/not to upgrade, but the wifi is dead again.

Code: Select all

Try putting firmware-linux and firmware-linux-nonfree on hold as well. Start off with all three and see if it works, if it does then re-enable them one by one till you find out the culprit.

You are using Mint Debian? (the firmware-ivtv package that is upgraded at 09:33:33 does not exist in Ubuntu but is in the Debian repo)
It is true that things can break sometimes, usually after some time there will come a next update which fixes this.
Note that you have switched to a newer kernel (2.6.32-5), and newer kernels may require an update of the firmware. I recommend to set nothing on hold and wait some time for an update that fixes this bug in your new kernel. Maybe you can downgrade to the previous kernel, but I don't know how to do this on Debian.

The wifi dies immediately after the upgrade (without a restart), so I'm still running the 'old' kernel.
Also, choosing kernel randomly at startup doesn't have any effect on the wifi malfunction.

It's Mint Debian.

I'll try to hold the other firmwares...

It's not exactly clear to me which hardware uses firmware-linux-free. I think it is safe to update the others (except iwlwifi).

Ha! It was just the network-manager
this is a similar story (Fedora) http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... de-866496/

...installed wifi-radar to be sure for the next time.
