Using LinuxMint 11 Katya on iMac 8.1 machine. Also using HP p1005 laserjet printer. This printer has always preformed well, and hp-setup installed whatever is necessary to make it work.
So also with LinuxMint 11, until a few days ago, I ran out of paper and couldn't get printer functioning again. Briefly I also chose an aluminium keyboard AINSI or ISO and got a window about XKB on booting. By changing back to apple keyboard, that window disappeared.

Now if I use sudo hp-setup I get the following message (in red) :
"warning: Qt/PyQt 4 initialization failed.
error: hp-setup requires GUI support (try running with --qt3). Also, try using interactive (-i) mode."

on one or 2 occasions the windows for hp-setup did appear and I was asked to install some plug-in, this failed, with error message: error 2.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Using LinuxMint 11 Katya on i Mac.
As mentioned previously Hp p1005 worked perfectly with this combination. Now it doesn't and there's no way I can get it back to normal.
The appropriate soft ware is installed. hp setup gives second message. However, I also get (but not always) the HP setup windows where I'm asked to download a plugin, which results in the message about a digital signature.

The printer works with windows, no problem

A HP pcs 1500 series works fine.

I think I've tried many of the suggestions given previously.

Thanks for your thoughts

Using Linux Mint 12 on an iMac.
Sorry to come back with HP P1005 problem: we had a power cut, printer recognized in system settings Printers; but doesn't do anything. I've unplugged, replugged turned power of. Hp-setup gives error messages. Tried hplip-install, got the following message:

INSTALL MISSING REQUIRED DEPENDENCIES
-------------------------------------
warning: There are 6 missing REQUIRED dependencies.
note: Installation of dependencies requires an active internet connection.
warning: Missing REQUIRED dependency: gcc (gcc - GNU Project C and C++ Compiler)
warning: This installer cannot install 'gcc' for your distro/OS and/or version.
error: Installation cannot continue without this dependency. Please manually install this dependency and re-run this installer.
diederic@LM-iMac ~/data/Downloads/hplip-3.11.10 $

gcc is installed!

What are the 6 missing required dependencies?

Is it really necessary to have these problems?
Thanks,

The model number HP Laserjet P1005.

Method 1:
You may refer to the below links and use the troubleshooters. Check if it lists and helps resolve any issues: Open the Printer troubleshooter:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/prod ... g=en&cc=us

Method 2:
You may check if you have the latest drivers installed for the device. You may refer to the below link for getting the latest drivers and check.

Hi,
As mentioned previously using LinuxMInt on i Mac; using a HP P1005 usb laser printer, which until 3 days ago functioned perfectly.
It printed about 30pages this morning; after tat I turned the printer off; this afternoon no printing function.

In terminal I typed dmesg with many lines of out put. The relevant ones are shown below

[code][/dmesg:

[ 18.356872] usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 3 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x3D17
[ 18.356951] usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp

[ 18.403332] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode11.fw" not found
[ 18.403334] b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Dri ... cefirmware and download the correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all instructions on this website.

[ 18.425349] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
[ 18.426892] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
[ 18.436601] applesmc: F1TgYS$\xffffffe96: read arg fail
[ 21.545066] usblp0: removed code]

I take it usblp0 identifies the printer.

According to the control centrer the printer is recognised; however when booting the printer remains deadly silent, which is normally not the case.

Any suggestions?

here is an Ubuntu guide

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems

to debugging printing problems: nearly all of the commands can be copied and pasted into a terminal; and you can look at the results;

I guess you have checked all the things like cables plugged in; cat hasn't chewed the cable etc (I saw that on a Debian thread);

Thanks pdc_2.
I enabled the printer though Control Centre>printer and clicking on the printer and realised that it was not enabled, so I clicked that and printer worked fine. I don't know why I didn't notice that before.
