Which is the the best Twitter client?

Post by xircon »

Now I have to admit, I know very little about Twitter, I signed up when it launched, couldn't see the point so never used it. But my brother tells me the easiest way to follow the news and results for the football team I support (the mighty Chester, kicked out of the league and dumped into the very lowly Evostik First Division North :().

I have lived in a different TV region for thirty years, so no local news, but was never a problem before, I could follow the scores and tables on TV/BBCi/papers, but we are now four or five leagues below what is reported. I have been using Facebook to follow the games, but that depends on someone I know going and posting.

Any opinions?

Many of us are leaving Twitter, or refusing to join in the first place. It's closed source, central point of control / failure and has a low signal (genuine chatter) / noise (spam / abuse / arguments / inane frat boy garbage / celeb accounts marketing their latest warez) ratio. Many FOSS people do have Identi.ca accounts though, which is much the same idea, often using the same clients, but is totally FOSS. You can use your own instance if you like, there's groups, it's decentralised and there's a lot higher signal / noise ratio.

Plenty of clients do Twitter and Identi.ca like Gwibber, Pino, Choqok if you want the convienience of something like a PM client sitting in your notification area, or addons to browsers like Yoono which is an addon for Firefox. Twitter have just announced that all the third party developed apps which helped make them popular are being "tolerated" for now, so don't get too comfy with anything other than the official Twitter client / site; you may be forced by Twitter to change down the line.

Completely agree, will only use it for the football and nothing else.

I only use Identi.ca. Never used Twitter.

I have used both Gwibber and Pino. Both do pretty much the same things, but Pino uses about half the RAM to do it on my LMDE 64.
Current hardware: a Dell OptiPlex 3010 desktop, a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop, and a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
Current OS: LMDE 3

I love Gwibber, but the version that comes from Debian is seriously old and out-of-date. I'll have to try Pino and see how I get on with that.

Pino is quite nice and lighter than Gwibber. It's what I use due to having not much ram and still wanting a decent looking responsive GUI app that I can leave running all the time.

I user Identi.ca over Pidgin, with the "pidgin-microblog" plugin. I have actually all my "comunications" centraliced over Pidgin (except skype) and is really really nice and useful!!

I found Gwibber to cause regular heavy disk churning so I ended up cutting it loose.

Twitter clients in general seem to have very low priority for Debian developers.

Is Pino worth a try?

Ideally there would be something both featureful and up-to-date.

I use Turpial.

Twitter feed:
http://twitter.com/#!/turpialve

Direct download:
http://turpial.org.ve/files/debian/stable/

The .deb works fine. I also put in into my Preferences > Startup Applications:

Name: Turpial
Command: turpial

So that it loads each time I log on.

Edit: it stays in the system tray and here is a search for screenshots of it (It uses your system language so if you use English it's in English):

I use gwibber, but had to pull it down off the sid repos because the version in testing is ancient.

Sent from my Android baby.

Turpial has a bug: I can't disable the notification sound.

DrHu - wash your mouth out with soap! :) Never, never associate Chester with M*nch*st*r :)

Chester is the county town of Cheshire, approximately 10 miles south of Liverpool and 35 miles west of M*nch*st*r:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chester

I have supported Chester's football club all my life (I am now 51). Fellow supporters post to twitter, live from the matches, so if I can't go (as I live a fair way away now and work shifts, I can only manage a few home games when visiting family and few away matches, close to home in Sheffield), I settled on Hotot in the end.

I believe M*nch*st*er do have a couple of football teams, but I don't think they are very good

:edit:
As you can see, I get a lot of info, we are playing Airbus in a pre-season friendly this evening and I am already getting posts about team selection:
