There are many ways to upgrade kernel.
Doing such upgrade can lend you with problems, not supported by the distros.
The key question is more on: are you ready for the surprise?
can you reinstall or repair when something break?
Speed is often the reason people want it.
Urge to try new stuff ( and don't mind breakage) is high on my case.
Kandell, the developer and LXDE maintainer, had this tutorial

Other method:
1. use distros that already had kernel 2.6.38, such as Kanotix, which is Debian based and is KDE desktop. I use it for sometime since it was released. no complaint
2. LMDE, use liquorix kernel, vincent has a tutorial on how to install liquorix kernel.
Do a search in this forum, you should get it
