LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking TESTING

Upgraded yesterday to the newest MintMenu's version.
Just after this, the "Show recent document's pugin does not work. Instead of showing the recent documents (as before the upgrade), produces the message

Could not load plugin: recent

Traceback (most recent call last):

File "/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintMenu/mintMenu.py", line 241, in PopulatePlugins
X = __import__( plugin )

File "/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintMenu/plugins/recent.py", line 28

My MintMenu version is 5.1.6 which I believe is the latest and the "Show recent documents" plugin appears to work fine, no error.

I can confirm this with mintMenu 5.1.7. I get exactly the same output as you have posted.

@Edit: No more issues with mintMenu 5.1.8.

When I installed this morning's updates gdm3 shows as gdm3 2.30.5-8 (no squeeze2 or anything after it) and my USB devices work fine. Not too sure what version I was running before but I've never had any problems with any USB device (so far). Are your repos still set to "testing" or did you change them to "squeeze"?

That's probably the reason you have gdm3 2.30.5-6 instead of gdm3 2.30.5-8 but I'm not sure if that's actually causing your USB problems. After doing several Google searches I haven't found anything directly involving gdm3 2.30.5-6 and problems with USB devices. I'm also not sure if this may be a problem with the fact your computer has USB 3 capability or not. Now you said that unplugging your USB devices and plugging them back in makes them work again. Is this a permanent fix or do you have to do this every time you boot up?

With MintMenu 5.1.6, there was not a problem with recent documents' plugins. That problem appears in MintMenu 5.1.7

I have to do it every time. It makes no difference if I have the USB-3 storage connected or not.

Best bet is to go back to testing. LMDE was and is based on Debian testing in the first place. I'm getting the impression that you installed LMDE and then changed the repos to squeeze? Would that be correct?

Makes no difference right now since wheezy is currently in the testing state. But if you use
wheezy instead of testing, then you will be running stable when wheezy goes stable.
That's why LMDE uses testing (and not squeeze or wheezy) in it's repos. Default LMDE repos:

I don't know if upgrading goes smoothly or not. First you have to update the repositories
to testing. After this, some people mean that it is better to run aptitude full-upgrade than apt-get dist-upgrade.
I am not sure because I've never done it before. I would've searched for a Debian Wiki or a good guide before I did an upgrade.

Pointing the repos to stable for a month or so after a new stable release is released is a common practice, but one should switch back to testing after a few weeks.
By the way, your avatar perfectly matches your current situation.

weird I tried to update using the terminal with this code:

then I get a warning about usb-modeswitch-data being updated with a the last text as END. I expected the ENTER button on the keyboard to make it proceed but it didin't.

I closed the terminal and tried synaptic package manager, it said I had a broken package, closed synaptic then went to terminal and entered

sudo dpkg --configure -a

after that I closed terminal again and went back to synaptic then it said I had a broken package so I went to filters and filtered broken packages then fix broken packages after that I tried to mark all packages and apply changes.

I was lead to believe that the apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade is the 'safest' way to upgrade so is synaptic really the safest mode now?

BTW I am running on LMDX (Mint Debian Xfce) RC

Just thought I'd mention:

For the past 2 days, with every update via the Mint-Update manager . . . it removes Firefox-4.0

It's not a problem ... I am getting really good at re-installing firefox-4.0 and xul-runner.

Just wondered if this problem is Mint or Debian derived?

Too late. I changed from squeeze to testing and that solved THAT problem. (Now it complains it can't find hardware sensors for fans, but that's another story)
