Driver install on LMDE

Post by theyummyfood »

I Im not super good a Linux yet so it would be nice if some one could give me a step by step install guide on how to get my graphics drivers up and going. I know it involves a .run from nvidia but how do I install it. I have a gt 430. Thanks.

There is a thread on this forum titled nvidia intel and compiz here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=55165

That should have what you need, and I believe there are at least a couple of other nvidia threads on here.

For Debian based distros, the smxi/sgfxi scripts come in handy.

The first thing to do, read their manual. It is not too long. Time spent will be worth it.
If after reading once, and get feeling of 'lost' , that is normal, proceed to install, catch up with manual later.

The steps are briefly, in my old memory, which might not be correct
It is important you MUST have a working internet for the installation.

1. install the smxi script, go to their website , link below and just follow, should be simple,
remember you can copy the instruction and paste to the terminal.
http://smxi.org/site/install.htm

2. Once the script is installed, you need to learn a way to get out of X or your window manager and become directly on the console or terminal. $ prompt ( user) or # prompt ( root)

check this out, craigevil has a nice description to follow
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 76&start=0

3. Once you login as root, password, you can type smxi or sgfxi and enter, it will run, then just watch the screen, read as it goes step by step, explaining many details to you, eventually each step it will let you have a few options, and you need to select one.

It can be a bit of worry, but just do it, if you select 'wrongly' and thing does not work out,
just repeat from reboot and get back to $,# , thus do not be overly worried.

It is OK to go through a few times , once you get it working, you will be comfortable of using it for many more times to come, it worked for me for ALL Debian based distros!

Just a few more words: sgfxi is intelligent to detect my nVidia and install the correct driver. It will also handle kernel upgrade.
